As ADHD personnel myself and having a boy of the same kind, I can only tell you that special diets, drugs etc do not work the same for everyone.

Condition remains the same. But it’s the management of the neuros that matter.
In school, there is a management system by the team of counsellors to manage diagnosis process.

Being a teacher of several kids with ADHD, I can only tell you that hyperactive kids are not necessarily with ADHD.

I also run a Saturday club for special youth and young adults. Anyone interested can message me.

You first need to find out what type of ADD/ADHD your child have. There are 7 types at the moment. To treat ADD/ADHD, you need a combination of a proper diet and medication.

Watch this video by Dr Amen about the 7 types of ADHD. Dr Amen is a child psychiatrist. Psychiatrists treats their patients by looking at symptoms and guessing. But Dr Amen treats his patients by looking at their brains via SPECT scan.

Condition will not get worse but the poor kid will continue to struggle with schoolwork and the poor parents will continue to struggle to understand their kid as teachers will simply push back the responsibilities once the kid is seen as \"problematic\".

Before my dd got diagnosed (P4), my relationship with her deteriorated a lot as I could not understand why she was unattentive, forgetful and seemed \"lost\" in class & while being coached at home. For years, I blamed the teachers, the noisy classroom, the school, her laziness, her carelessness etc..... So much yelling and crying in my family.

I cannot forget that day when I asked her how she felt after taking Ritalin for one week (trial) - she said: \"Mummy, now I know what is going on in class.\"

:yikes: I felt so bad: what was my poor girl feeling all these years?

Can i chk how long did it take to get your DD diagnosed? Is it a lengthy process? I plan to go thru polyclinic to get referral for Child Guidance Clinic at HPB.

So things improved alot after medication? It is quite long term right?
Touch wood - did you observe any side effects?

Appreciate your input. I have a 8yo son displaying several ADHD symptoms, very dreamy in class, cannot control emotions, likes to argue for the longest time when he is being asked to do something he doesnt want to... list goes on.

I sent my dd to a private education psy clinic for diagnosis. I knew it was expensive but we couldn't wait as my dd was already mid-P4 then. Got an appointment within a month and diagnosis took 3 rounds. Got all the neccessary paperwork (got psy report, letter for MT exemption, time for extention, etc) and liaised with the school beginning term 4. This is so the school got enough time to notify MOE and get approval for PSLE.


She is still on Ritalin (10mg), and no side effects. But you need to work closely with your doctor!

Actually, my learning from the entire process is PATIENCE, LOVE and UNDERSTANDING (not easy lah!). To lower my expectations of her academic performance, and yet to push her to do the best that she can be.

So, out of these 7 groups of ADD / ADHD, did Dr Amen identify which group need to consume Ritalin, or which group no need to eat medicine drug ?

We started out with Ritalin - on trial for 2 months initially. We monitored her closely (for change in behaviour, eating habits, weight loss, sleep problems, etc) as we heard that some kids may experience side effects.


Lucky no problems - she ate well, sleep normal etc - so we continued with the Ritalin.

In Sec 2, the doctor recommended trying out Concerta and Ritalin LA. But Concerta did not work (can still see the onset of her constant figeting, shouting, laughing louder, talking faster, very moody, not listening, becoming emotional quickly, mood swings - especially in the afternoons when she is tired) and Ritalin LA worked at odd times (like 10pm when it is bedtime).

So we continued with Ritalin as it calms her down and we can actually hold a conversation without her hysterics and emotional ups-and-downs.

I don’t know how long she will be on Ritalin - I guess as long as she needs it. It seems that as she gets older, the "non-Ritalin" behaviours seems to be getting more obvious, not better. When we are outdoors and Ritalin is already off for some hours, I find that I have to step in and speak to her calmly when she starts shouting at us or her moods swing at the slightest provocation.
