If you are not living near the \"good\" school, isn't that you don't stand a good chance? Unless you are alumni?:goodpost: phtthp, very enlightening post there.
Am also in a dilemma, as I do not know if i will regret one day, for not trying my best to get my boy into a 'good' primary school. But 'good' primary schools are not near my place. But if my boy studies in a nearby primary school, i can imagine he would have more time to rest, no need to spend so much time on travelling. Would be so tiring on him if he has to travel to and fro everyday.
Anyone here contemplating a nearby primary school just so your child can sleep more and waste less time on travelling? But I also have not submitted my PV application yet. Dateline is October. It is most likely I won't be picked since I do not have any special skills
Just wondering if there are any like-minded parents here? That if your child studies smart, he or she will flourish. No matter which school he/she attends. -

You don't seem like a local. Coz a local will not ask if there's any racial quota in a school since there isn't. Are u a citizen? a lot will depend on whether u are citizen or not.ansari:

hi, thanks for the reply. i am a local. not sure how a Chinese affiliated school operate n their
in take.[/quote]Your child will need to learn Mandarin from young to go to a SAP school. Intake is like any other SAP school, demand is high. Only Chinese is offered and they start taking it Higher Chinese from primary 1. So long as your child can handle the language, you can try enrolling him for it. Everything will be in Chinese btw, like school songs, even assembly could be conducted in Chinese. A number of non Chinese do enrol into sap schools, so it isn't impossible.
Be prepared for the balloting though. Coz there's no guarantee that your child can go in. -
ansari:
Hi. Non Chinese can apply for these schools, but bear in mind that your child will be likely the only one of a different race and he will be \"free\" during the Chinese second language roster timings. In other words the school will not have any alternative activities during these times. Since second language is compulsory for Singapore citizens, if you are one, you will need to send your kid to an alternative center for second language. Which will create an extra burden on the child.HI gUYS,

If you are a PR and have not gotten a PV spot, your chances of getting a place in the school is 0, according to previous balloting results.
I would advise you to avoid schools that do not have the second language that you want. Not worth the trouble in my opinion. -
ansari:
There are no racial quotas for Singaporeans in Singapore schools in Singapore. As long as you qualify under one of the phases, you qualify for balloting, if not direct entry.HI gUYS,

Balloting for Sg citizen within 1 km is intense, for these 3 SAP schools, Tao Nan, Ai Tong, Catholic High.
If your child is PR : zero chance
In kindergarten from nursery N2 to K2 (aged 4 to 6) :
What is your child's Mother Tongue ?
If mother tongue is Tamil, Malay or Hindi, not Chinese, schools do not allow parents to enrol kid into SAP schools. A child who did not study Chinese during kindergarten entering Primary 1, will find it a struggle to learn Higher Chinese, in SAP schools.
These 3 schools : start Higher Chinese, right from Primary 1.
Higher Chinese standard is higher than Normal Chinese.
Call up the 3 school, to confirm this.
Find out from the school -
For Non-Chinese children who enrol into SAP schools, do SAP schools conduct entrance proficiency test for K2 children in Mandarin, before permit them to enrol, into SAP schools ?
If your child did not study Chinese in kindergarten from N2 to K2, but learn Tamil, Malay or Hindi, then enrol child into Non-SAP schools that offer This, as Mother tongue.
It is common for Non-SAP primary schools to offer Tamil or Malay as mother tongue, but few schools offer Hindi. You may google Moe website, to confirm if school offer Hindi or not, if your child currently learning Hindi in kindergarten.
In some schools, Hindi is not taught during normal curriculum time, Mon to Fri. Instead, parents have to bring kids to attend special Hindi lessons on Saturday morning 9 am to 12 noon, elsewhere outside school premises. Yes, every Saturday, for some schools.
May contact the school of your interest, ask where is the place on every Saturday morning, for child to learn Hindi ?
School will provide parents info required.
listing of Mother tongue, in each school, found here.
http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/admissi ... vacancies/
May google website, for school's contact number. -
Hi just to highlight. MOE does not allow students to take any second language. Second language must be mother tongue of either parent.
If your mother tongue is not one of the listed second languages available, you can apply for exemption from MOE.
There are lots of second languages that are not Singapore’s national languages and some centres offer classes for these. -
What I meant above is unless one of the parents are Chinese or studied Chinese as a second language during their school days (local schools), MOE will not allow you to take up Chinese as a second language.
-
If a child has an Indian father and a Chinese mother who had studied Chinese before (or vice versa), mother tongue can be Tamil or Chinese.
But what happen if a child has an Indian father and a Thailand Chinese mother (never studied Chinese before : only speak Thai language), but child is PR, enrolled into our local school here, can Mother tongue still be Chinese ? Although mother did not learn Chinese before, but she is a Chinese woman.
