True! some schools are popular cos they are branded and relaxed... (rich kids have many options - academics less impt?? )Homework.
Some popular schools do not give that much homework. My neighbour's daughter is in a popular all girls' school in bukit timah...she told me her daughter hardly has homework...even if there is, can be done in 10 min...but another one whose child is in neighbourhood school has a lot of homework several times of the week.
Some schools are popular (neighbourhood or branded) because they are full-on wrt academic success... -

branded, rich sch assume the kids having outsourced teaching n learning outside .
the good academic sch in neighbourhood are working very hard to bring in results - but bcos it serve the mass kids fr various family background, their psle results may not get a 100% pass . -

[/quote]I was actually thinking more of how they have cushy family businesses to fall back on... who needs stellar grades?
They might not even go for much tuition... -
For my kid. More Homework started coming in swiftly at p5 . But teachers would usually give the kids time during lessons to complete. So it is up to the kid whether he prefers to finish his work in school or bring it home. Mine prefers to get his done in school so he can have more time after school to do whatever he likes.

This year, I see her having more math homework...textbook and school worksheets. Daughter is MT exempted, so if there are available time slots, she will get homework done. If there is CME, then have to bring home.
Neighbour's daughter and mine are in p5...she has asked me on several occasions if my daughter has lots of homework. She said her girl is very free at home several times a week. -
I am a parent staying in Yew Tee. And I bought a BTO flat in Bukit Batok, just adjacent to Keming Primary. And the expected date of completion of my BTO flat is in YE2017.
My eldest daughter is going into P1 next year. She would be registering under phase 2C this coming P1 registration exercise. However I am in the dilemma now to choose whether should I go ahead with registering her with Keming Primary or other neighbourhood schools in Yew Tee. If it is going to be in Yew Tee, I have only in mind De La Salle Primary, Unity Primary and Yew Tee Primary. Are there any parents here who is staying in Yew Tee who would be able to enlighten me as to which of these 3 schools are better than the other? Thank you in advance. -
Commenting on Road_runner 's questions, I think it’s tough on the child to commute daily from Bt Batok to Yew Tee area for 5+ years (pri 2 to pri 6). Getting into Keming will depend on luck at the balloting, but if your child is S’porean, high chance can still get into Bt View or Lianhua in Phase 2CS.

Very likely needs to raise the bar. Not sure if trying to catch 2nd or 3rd place. Maybe they know most of the children don't attend expensive enrichment classes outside school, so they come out with more homework to keep the children engaged.
Could it be the principal trying to raise the bar? Every neighbourhood has a 'best' of the cluster...so those ranked 2nd and 3rd are trying to catch up.lee_yl:
Some neighborhood schools friends' children attending seem to be more pressurize than the better schools.
You need to do some research first, ask around the culture, homework load etc before deciding if the school is suitable for your child.
I heard from a friend grumbling that her son's particular teacher in ACS don't teach much, and this teacher was caught playing iphone games during lessons many time.
So going to branded school has some risks as the teachers expect these children to have attended expensive enrichment outside school. -

teachers in some branded schools will hardly teach or else teach the bare minimum. son told me his form teacher also played with the iPhone in primary school after giving the class some work to do or else marked tuition homework (moonlight).

There will be always be some ‘black sheep’ n ‘white sheep’ teachers in both branded n neighborhood schools.
It all depends on your luck!
