President’s Scholarship awarded to 4 youths

SINGAPORE: Four promising youths received the President's Scholarship at the Istana on Friday evening (Aug 14).

President Tony Tan Keng Yam said that by accepting the scholarship, they have also accepted the responsibility that comes with it - to preserve and protect what has made Singapore and the Public Service strong, while continuing to innovate and improve for the future.

\"In a more diverse Singapore society, you will need a discerning mind, to think critically through the issues and challenges confronting Singapore and our people, and to formulate policies which will serve the interests of Singaporeans. You must engage and understand citizens at all levels, encourage and harness new ideas to serve the people, and place the nation's continued progress as your top priority,\" said Dr Tan.

The President said the scholarship recipients carry the mission of continuing the work of Singapore's pioneers in leading the nation to greater heights. He urged them to seize every opportunity to do good, especially in helping the underprivileged, and to uphold the principles of integrity, service and excellence.

One of the recipients is 19-year-old Clara Lim, a robotics enthusiast who was once the president of Dunman High School's robotics team. She will be majoring in Mechanical Engineering in University College London, becoming the first President's Scholar in nine years to do so.

She said: \"The main reason why I chose to study engineering was because, firstly, it was my interest, and secondly, I think it would be able to add diversity to the civil service. But moving ahead, I think the skills that I will be able to learn in university, for example, the way in which engineers think through problems, perhaps in a very analytical or very systematic manner, will be able to give me a framework to think about issues when I eventually start working and formulate policies for Singaporeans.\"

Clara can also speak Malay fluently. “I am very thankful for this opportunity. I also hope to use this chance to help more people,\" she told Channel NewsAsia in Malay.

That is the sentiment shared by the rest of the scholars.

Aspiring police officer Tan Kuan Hian, who was recently awarded the Singapore Police Force Scholarship, will be studying Liberal Arts at Johns Hopkins University. Meanwhile, Russell Ewe Yuhang, who also holds a Singapore Armed Forces Scholarship, will read Politics and Philosophy at London School of Economics and Political Science. Joining him in the UK is Lim Tze Etsuko, who will major in Law at the University of Cambridge.

Having come from humble beginnings, Etsuko is determined to pay it back. She said: \"I grew up in an education system that meant that even though I was on food stamps and financial aid in primary school, I was nonetheless able to succeed and I had a good and supportive family along the way.\"

In the future, Etsuko hopes that she will be able to practise law and at the same time contribute to the community.

He feels very shy about making appt and asking teachers for help.

No need to feel shy lah...juz ask the subj Ts for consultations...but Ts may hv limited time for every student if there are too much doubts to clear...

Fyi, during CT / EOY exams, students will ran forward to catch hold of their Ts to ask questions even when they are walking ard in the sch...

Encourage your child to drop the teachers a Whatsapp or email to arrange for consultations. Ask him to provide a few time slots. Sometimes the teachers will ask if the students could meet in small groups.

Why Dunman High does not open up places to JAE students after GCE O level, whereas other Junior College like RI, HCI, VJC, NJC do so ?

My daughter wants to drop TRP next year. She’s in Year 1 this year. I’d like to check with fellow parents, is TRP important? What are the consequences of dropping TRP? My daughter is citing lack of interest and busy schedule as reasons to drop this subject. She currently does 3rd language, has CO as her CCA, and does ballet twice a week.


Would appreciate some advice on this. Thank you!
