I have different views as KiasuNewbie.
My niece is currently a Sec 4 students in Yishun Town secondary school. She is happy in the school. She said that the teachers are very caring and patience, the principal is very encouraging too! It is true that the school offers pure sciences and A Maths for all Express students.
It is not true that the school forces the students to drop subjects If they do not meet 70% or so. My niece did not do very well for her A Maths and Chemistry, definitely not 70%, but the teachers did not ask her to drop. Instead, small group coaching is catered for her.
The school is doing their best to help our children, as parents, we should be more supportive and develop a good partnership in order to help our kids! -
I meant I have different views as chenks, not kiasunewbie…

YTSS was in band 5 for 2010 ‘O’ results and MOE has already stopped publishing school banding in 2011. I have gone for Yishun Town Sec Opendays for the past two years, their results have improved tremendously, if there were school banding, YTSS will definitely in either band 3 or 2! Anyway, there is no more ranking!
I’m really impressed with their students especially the way they carry themselves. During the Openday, the sec 2 student who had guided us during the school tour was very confident and able to articulate very well. We are not just looking at schools with good results but also schools that are able to groom our children to equip with skills of the 21 century. YTSS, definitely, has done her part in this area!
Keep it up! -
I know for sure that you better not choose Yishun Town Sec as I heard from my girl who is a pupil there this year that the Principal & VP are both transferred out. Anyway, I'm looking for another nearby school to transfer my child to. Really regret I did not listen to some of the comments from kiasuparents last year warning about the not so good stuff said about YTSS. Next yr my dd will be in Sec 2 but my dd finally confirmed with her sec 3 seniors this yr they have been forced to drop pure science as continuing to study pure sc will mean results of child and school both suffer or something like that. Sigh, so it is indeed true the school promises plenty when child is coming to Sec 1 but later does not walk the talk. Pui! Maybe others may think differently but maybe their children didn't forced to drop subjects lah.

My child in YTSS sec 4 this year, according to her, it is not true that the school is trigger happy to ask students to drop subjects or drop to combine sciences instead of pure sciences. In fact the opposite happened, the teachers took extra efforts on coaching the weaker students, only when all efforts done and student proved that it was better for them and for their own good to take up combined sciences that the school will meet their parents to discuss their situation.
The school holds high standard both academically as well as grooming the students in discipline. Students who constantly get into disciplinary may be advised to change to another school that the environment may be more suitable. It is understandable that because the high standard of the school, DSA students who are weaker academically may find it especially difficult to be on par with their peers. I am not sure if Zhu kenobi’s child enrolled via DSA, else she should not have issue coping with the school’s pace. Anyway it would be good for her if both she and her parent transfer her to other school if she really cannot cope.
As for my child, the school, teachers, CCAs and the extra activities conducted only as autonomous has developed her into a confident young woman who is ready to take up more challenges. My second child has also joined the school. -
My son also attends YTSS. I am all thumps up for this school. The teachers are dedicated. If the child slackens in a particular subject, the teacher ensures that the child is taught during the subject days which are days the child stays back after school. My son is going to sit for O levels this year. The teachers are very hardworking and i am of the view that i could not have sent him to a school better than YTSS.

It is not just academic result that would reflect how well the school. YTSS was not my child or our list of school four years back. But after hearing from some other parents about the school’s strict discipline and academic results, it was first how the students conducted themselves when we first visited their open house. I also took time to observe how the students behave outside the school at near by blocks which saw that they were all well groomed on physical appearance, no funny fashions or bad behaviours. From that it also reflect on the schools and teachers how well they conducted and that students took pride wearing their uniform. It was only after my child joined the school that the school has strict guidelines on grooming that they took seriously and a regular routine to check on students as well as to keep their discipline checked. I understand that the teachers, school manager and discipline master would patrol blocks near school or shopping malls to look our for students who misbehave, I saw this that it is beyond their set duties to perform such task that they too took pride on ensuring that the school uphold to the standards they values. It is natural to transform a disciplined learning environment into a conducive one for students and staffs. I would say a big well done and thank you for all the people there on behalf of my child who is graduating soon.

This school is one of the top schools in Yishun. Well-known for the good discipline, good academic results produced out.
But the teachers internally, competing to produce top students from their own class. The last that I heard off. Good in a way that helps your child to strive for better results. -
Anyone’s kids starting sec 1 in 2016 at YSTSS?
