          Hi junemum72,

I was told by my DD that they were first given a form to indicate their choices. She chose IVP as first choice. After which, there were a mini assignment or test. I believe that was a test to see if they suit IVP. But not all was given that assignment from what she told me. Then for DI, there was an audition. After audition, there was an assignment for them to complete. Assignment is strictly to be done by the child only. So after these series of events, DD class was told to go to go ask and learn this week to select their choices. Not sure if this is the survey that you meant? We haven’t done it yet as DD was unsure if she want DI instead. But I believe this should be the last round to do their selection.

            Hi,

Would like to hear from GEP parents if they encountered a situation when it comes to choosing GEP centre, parent and child both have different views.

Parent’s first choice could be the nearest centre (SAP school, co-ed).
However, DC is only willing to transfer to a single gender and non-SAP school (similar to DC’s current school environment).

Can the parent’s view prevail? Or should the child be allowed to have his/her way?

I think parents and child should reach a consensus after discussing together. For me, I will try and accede to my son’s preference as long as I am able to work around factors like transport or distance and he is willing to sacrifice the time and sleep for travelling. Would like him to consider all factors carefully and be committed to his decision/choice. Ultimately, I think it’s important he is committed to and happy with his choice since he will be spending the next 3 years there.

Thanks Grr_roxy for sharing. I checked and it seems the survey I mentioned got nothing to do with the IVP nor IRS. Seems they were not been told anything about these 2 yet. I was told the teacher mentioned in class before but so far I have not heard of an audition or survey or any test etc. Hmm...only left few days before school holiday kick starts..

Sorry with my 'sotong blurriness\"..

What are IVP, IRS, and DI? Are these lessons / subjects in GEP classes? Do gep students have the same test timeframe like other student (mainstream) in term of CA1 & CA2, SA1 & SA2? Do they have mini test in between, spelling tests, etc like normal? Thanksss..

I think the kid should be allowed to choose the school he / she wants to go. Reason being they are going to study there for the next 3 years, so it is important they are not going to be unhappy in a parent's preferred school. In addition, GEP syllabus being a stretched one, it is not easy for the kid to cope with additional academic requirements plus a drastic change in environment - may be a good idea to keep the transition change of environment to a minimal impact so that the kid can concentrate more on the additional academic demands.

Especially for case whereby the kid has strong view on what they want - it's best to respect their view, unless you manage to convince him / her to change this view with very good valid reason that they concur with. In such cases, best for parents to act as advisory board, unless you think the decision will cause great harm to the kid. In case of choosing GEP school, doubt it can go very wrong as most GEP schools are of good standard, esp. if I am right in guessing the 2 schools you are referring to 😉

IVP, IRS, DI, FPS etc. are P5 GEP projects that the kids will engage in either in team or individual basis. You will learn more about each when the kid reaches end of P4. Allocation to these will depend on kid's preference plus selection tests for some.

Test time are a little different from mainstream and they called it differently. No \"CA1\", start 1st test in May timeframe. 2nd test is in Aug and last test is in Oct. Some daily assignments contribute to small part of test scores - they have quite some assignments (esp. those done in class) so you probably won't know which contribute how much.

Parents have final say. Paiseh, I'm not the most democratic parent 😂
Although I will explain clearly and list down the reasons why I reached that decision.
