I am keen to find out about the Science programme too. Seems not many comments from parents regards to the superstar tutor. However, I noticed that they invested quite a bit on TV advertisement lately.

I hope that she will remember the tough road she will have to take if she wants to do standard...and for her a much tougher route. as her mother, I am fully aware but very worried she makes a promise to work very hard and then forgets about it when she is in the midst of psle preparation.


since I know her weakness, shouldn't I make a decision whether to take foundation or standard?

Hi Janet,

MCQs make up 60%. Of the remaining 40%, not all questions require answering “techniques”. There is enough time for your DD to pick up answering techniques at a comfortable pace while focusing more on MCQs and short/ direct open-ended questions. She is happy that her school allows her to take Standard Science and that is really a good start. PSLE is based on bell curve. Many students find answering “techniques” a challenge so it might not be that much a disadvantage to your DD.

The current promotion is not attractive to me, sign up 2 core titles and get free Samsung tab worth $500. I checked online and each title costs $498. That means almost $1000.
I was hoping for some bundle sales.. Like much earlier, they had a bundle sale promo where after the discounts, each title eventually costs only less than $300 and with a free synthesis and transformation title.

If in your shoes, I will consider if doing the subject at standard level will mean a big stretch for my kid. What did it take for her to be able to make it this far? Has it been at the expense of a lot of other things, a lot of stress on you and on her?


Will it mean that to clear this subject, she may be sacrificing time for the others and eventually affect her results of the other subjects?

Would doing the subject at foundation level mean that she will be able to cope better at her pace allowing her more time to improve on her other subjects?

Don't think so much about PSLE and t-score to get into what stream at which school. Think about your child's capabilities and make your decision base on that.

the 'explain your answer' in the OE section is 20 marks...applicable for standard and foundation. Now that she is exempted from MT, our focus is on 3 subjects. For science, it's one day of lower block and another day of upper block. Science upper block still has 2 topics...forces and energy.
Although her school offers foundation science, her teacher doesn't want her to take it.

I have a PTM...will speak to her teacher regarding this. Thanks.

Hi Janet, I read about your dilemma about choosing Foundation or Standard.

If allowing a child to take the subjects at Foundation level, it helps to boosts up the child's self-esteem and confidence. This will increase the child's chance to go up to Normal Academic. I pm you more later to explain another friend's case.

for foundation science in p6, the total marks are upon 70.

there are 15 MCQ questions, a section with short structured questions and open ended sections.

I have emailed daughter’s child psychologist to seek her advice.

I checked with my Niece earlier. She failed 2 subjects by a few marks each. Asked her if she is doing all 3 standard subjects next year, she said not too sure because teacher did not mention anything. But since nothing mentioned, she guessed she should be doing standard subjects. :scratchhead:

Your niece is also exempted from MT?

There was a form with the subject combinations issued with the report book. The form will show what subjects the school has recommended for the child for P6...signed by the teacher. It is for parents to acknowledge.

Yes, she is exempted from MT. She is actually one year older than our DD. Due to some valid reason, she missed school for 1.1/2 years so when she returned to school, the principal had her join one level lower than what she should have been.She was already weak academically and missing the 1.1/2years of school, she had problem catching up with the syllabus. Furthermore, she is a dreamer and slow in writing. She gets an extra 15 mins during tests/examinations but still it is insufficient... Most of the time, She is unable to complete her papers, especially math.

I would follow the school's recommendation. They are educators for so many years and they know best what are the possible results a student might get with the subjects' combination. All the best to your decision.
