Can anyone give me your views about TLL and LP? How different are they in terms of materials and curriculum? And which is your preference and why? :thankyou:

My daughter concurrently attended both TLL and LP English for almost half year when she was in K2. She preferred TLL as she found it more challenging.

      JMHO:

TLL is more like enrichment than tuition. That is, you are quite sure that your child has a good grasp of English and you send your child to TLL so that he/she could be stretched further. I have seen students attending TLL but had to quit as they were not able to cope or see no improvement for the high fees paid.

LP more conventional. Is more of a tuition than an enrichment. Their worksheets are systematic and provides a good foundation in English.

Thank you for your feedback, this is exactly what I wanted to find out. We have been with LP for 2 years since K1 and although we are very grateful to LP for teaching ds to read, I feel it is now time to move on. I found their last year's worksheets a tad too routine and drilling. Hence, I started to have these thoughts of late. Thank you for your prompt advice :thankyou:

          Hi,

My DS is weak in close passage and comprehension. Does LP teach them on that? My DS cannot sit still. He hates drilling or routine work, any tuition centre or tutor can handles that?

LP does cover cloze and comprehension but i feel it can be quite routine because they are trying to build foundation. If your DS cant sit still, he may not enjoy the lesson

Hi lee_yl, what is your take for a P1 child to attend LP P2 or TLL P1? Will the child finds bored to repeat the level? :scratchhead:

Personally I would go for TLL P1 as I find their materials more enriching and they cover the topics differently from school. Builds up the children's vocabulary fast and also widens their horizon with constant exposure to topics related to current affairs, politics, cultural and technology.

Fundamentally, the two schools have different approaches so it is difficult to make an apple-to-apple comparison. The question parents should consider is which approach is more suited for their child; LP which is good in building up and strengthening the foundation or TLL which enriches and a lot of materials covered in TLL are outside school syllabus.

Unfortunately, depending on the primary school, I understand that some children, after attending TLL, find their school's English lessons mundane.

                  Thanks littleprince.

After reading the many pages of these forums, it seems to show that I should send my son to tuition if not his results will get worse in P5. Any tutor to recommend? I'm staying in Bedok.

                    Hi,

My kids are attending Shine language. It is a home based tuition. So far, I find that it has given them good foundation to start P1. My eldest DD has been doing pretty well for her English. This is also partly due to her passion in English language which I believe the centre does play a part. My kids had been enjoying the lessons as the teachers are very passionate and nice.
My DD ex-classmate parent came to me once to ask me where my DD go for English tuition. Her ex-classmate was from TLL and the mum does not find it effective.
But I believe Shine compared to TLL will not be as challenging for some kids. So you will need to access your kids’ abilities. My DD is still continuing with Shine as she just love the teacher and the lesson. She don’t want to stop even though I find that she can take more challenging work.
My P2 DS is also in Shine. Though he does not read as much as DD, he is able to write a decent compo in P1 giving him full marks in exams last year. Not bad for him considering that he don’t read as much.

Hi, TLL is suitable for children who are already very advanced in the subject, at least +30% more advanced than the school curriculum, it provides reinforcement to advanced students. Of course, you have to also consider the hostility of the administrative staff and the arrogance of TLL teachers, priority given to GEP students, plus their very high fees. Hence parents would expect to see significant results for the premium and the easiest way for the center is to provide places to TOP students. Assessing the child’s needs is key in making the right choice for tuition center. Hope this helps.
