I just placed an order for a Joyoung soy milk maker. I’ve been eyeing one for a long time, just didn’t have the time to follow through the purchase.

Anyone has any true and tried recipes? The demo at OG didn’t decant or filter the processed milk, and I’m not sure if I like it that way. I prefer my soy milk properly filtered. What do you guys use?

If that is the same as my old machine bought from China. It comes with a filter that works quite well in filtering. I just put the soy beans and water only. Think it takes about 20mins (long time never use liao 😂 ) for it to cook. There was a period of time I used the soy milk as replacement of hot water for oats. It may comes with a recipe booklet also. And my this machine retired already and I have another (white elephant now) that comes with a strainer for making tofu.

White elephant already?? Uh oh. Doesn't bode well for me 😉

Do you soak the soybeans for like 8 hours before using? Does it make any difference whether you soak the beans or not?

Oops did I soak or not arh 😆 let me think again :rotflmao: i remember washing the beans in the morning before pouring it into the machine. You may want to trial and error.

Btw on the usage, no worries..I have been using it almost every weekdays till one day, I forgot to wash it after I used it in the morning before we went for a trip. So when back home, I dont dare to look the inside of it. Just threw it away  er xin I tell you.

The newer one is white elephant coz my 'customer'(hubby) not always at home. So no point I cook the soy milk and no one appreciate it.

I read that must soak for at least 8 hours, not more than 10 hours else run rancid or sth. Soaking removes a bad substance that gives some people indigestion or sth other problem.

The other time, some weeks ago, I grind the soaked beans in a blender and cook it over low heat in a pot, then kept in a tumbler chilled in the fridge. Add honey only when I want to drink. A lot of work.

OK. Thanks. Will soak for 8 hours. Yes, it does take a lot of work to do without the soy milk maker.

What other new toy are you looking at next?

I have a Joyoung for cannot remember how many years already. The strainer that comes with the machine does not filter off the beans that well. I use a coffee sock to filter it a 2nd time.

I believe the machine comes with 2 functions for soy milk. Dry beans or soaked beans. Check the booklet that comes with it. I usually soak the beans overnight before popping them into the machine the next morning.

I have used to machine to make almond paste, black sesame paste, pumpkin soup, mushroom soup, tomato soup, etc. Supposed to be able to make kaya in it as well but I have yet to try that.

One thing you will realise is you will be left with a fair bit of okara (bean pulp) or whatever pulp of the paste that you are making. It will be a waste to throw them away as they are still very edible. I use okara in omelette and beef patties or meatballs. With almond pulp I use it to make almond butter cake, for black sesame, I make mua chee or orh ku kueh. 😉

The 'by products' sound so much more exciting than soy milk

Hey Funz! Thanks for the tips. I just received my Joyoung today. Lazy Qxpress delivery man just left the thing outside my apartment! Anyone could have just taken it.

I got the DJ13b-d68sg or something like that. The controls are all in Chinese so I had a hard time figuring out how to do what. There was just a skimpy English manual that maps the controls to some obscure English words. Under the Selection menu, there are \"grains\", \"soy beans\", \"soy milk\", \"juice\", \"cereal\", \"porridge\", \"soup\". I can also select \"Warm\", \"Easy Wash\" and \"Stir\". What makes it confusing is that there are 3 more Action buttons \"Soaked Soy Milk\", \"Fast Soy Milk\", and \"Start/Cancel\". I don't think any engineer can make the thing more confusing.

Anyway, I groped my way around, and used the \"Soy Bean\" selection with the \"Fast Soy Milk\" action. 25 minutes later, I filtered the result with the provided strainer (you are right. It sucks. But not because of its granularity. It was really small and I had to keep clearing the strainer). But the end result was simply the best soy milk I've ever tasted 🙂 I like it think and milky, which was exactly what I got. I used honey rock sugar, so maybe that's why it tasted so nice for me.

My okara went straight into the bin. Will try more concoctions in the coming days. I guess I'm going to be on a bean diet in the next few weeks... I didn't take lunch but was already quite full drinking just the soy bean and the red bean-black sesame \"cereal\" I made with the thing.
