Actually this happens in every SAP school. By P5 they will decide to proceed with hcl for PSLE or drop to normal Chinese. However majority will continue like what someone mentioned 75% in NYPS will do it.

I have this personal experience to share. Truly bright sparks can be trained to be exam-smart too to score. My straight \"A\"s friend was very weak in Chinese too and he had tuition for this subject only. Inthe end he was trained to be exam smart to score \"A\" for Chinese too. But he could not hold a conversation in Mandarin nor could he write a topic he had never come across. And he landed himself a good scholarship n went to ivy-league schools. Today he does not speak mandarin at all but he overcome his barriers for a purpose. That, to me, is truly bright sparks. :lol:

:lol: thanks for those compliments. actually i just wanted to suan some people.

i agree English is important, just as any other MT. linguistic skills do develop different parts of the brain unlike sci or math etc. it is a cruel fact that grades matter a lot in the education system over here. so you have to keep up or you lose out. perhaps that is the greatest motivation as you call it.

despite that, my English grades have been B-ish all along. but that did not hinder me much in that sense of getting into top schools or achieving good grades in other subjects.

just wanted to point out that to the group who thinks that their kids are highly disadvantaged merely due to MT. that is quite nonsense. main issue is to maintain a line of fairness for everyone. some are good in this some are good in that. you do not ask for people to suit you in areas which you are good in.

please spend some effort in inculcating the right attitude towards learning and in life. instead of demanding the world to accomodate you, which along the way, disadvantage the rest.

equal weightage is good. they show you who actually shines in all areas. if you cant beat that, dont complain. i have friends in less-than-top schools. but they still remain respectable and are strong in their personal areas.

Actually this should be the case for SAP school. In non SAP schools, some kids even appeal to take HCL in P5.

Then maybe it's the whole cohort that did well in the 3A* subjects that drag down his aggregate and not his CL?
Maybe his CL could be a C but others in the same cohort didn't do so well, so his C become a B?

I know of a child who got 1A* and 3A but also managed to get 245, even though his mum suspected 1 or 2 of his As are low A.

:rubhands: Just felt she subjected herself to this through the 'potato eliteness' she projected in her letter and also she may not have got her facts right.
