Are there any President Scholars from low tier or mid tier JCs?

Mostly from RI/RJC, HCJC, NJC. Some outliers in some years.

BTW, do you know of any Ministers graduating from Jurong, Yishun or Tampines JC (just to name some examples but not necessarily so).

        Pls share - thanks.

Most ministers (not looking beyond Cabinet yet) are in their 50s. So ask yourself, which were the top JCs that top O level students in that age group would typically pick in that era? It could be RJC, HCJC, NJC. Fewer from TJC. Therefore, you'd see more from these top 3 JCs.

Were TPJC and YJC around yet? JJC was around but was pitched at a diff group of O level applicants.

If you wait for a few more elections to pass, you might see more from NUSH, VJC, DHS perhaps.

There's currently one from VJC, Lawrence Wong.

The JCs/high schools of some Cabinet ministers like Yaacob, Khaw, Gan, Iswaran are not published.

You mustn't just look at their JCs. Many came from neighbourhood primary and secondary schools.

There were others who'd stepped down. There might be a few from TJC during LKY or GCT's admin, if you dig the archives? There could be more from mid-tier JCs in the second rung - SMSes, MOSes and third rung - Parl Secs.

For the daughter in RI, she might stand out more and do a lot better in leadership etc in a less-competitive environment. But how we see it is that being in RI gives her a chance to learn where she stands, and if she doesn't get to the top there, so be it. At least she is not struggling, which would a concern. It could be a disadvantage later when she is up against those who have leadership experience in other JCs and she may not have in RI, but it's a risk we decided to take. There is no perfect situation where everything works in an ideal way; those who look for the ideal usually are disappointed in one aspect or another.
I agree with how you look at it long term, holistically, at what the child learns, and the process and environment of learning.
RI does have a very unique curriculum. Which school at secondary level teaches political philosophy? The experience is unique and valuable, and for that, I am thankful.
As a parent, I need to remind myself (and my child) to look at education holistically, and not be caught up with the day to day stress.

Meritocracy is definitely NOT dead in Singapore. If it is, why is everyone chasing after grades n excellence in all areas?
Just want to add that Meritocracy also applies to the private sector hor. Don't just look at the govt scholars and ministers.

Not every one with 6-10 distinctions covet govt scholarships. Some chase after grades and excellence in all areas, because they want to get into top colleges on \"FMS\" so as to get into coveted jobs in some private companies 🙂 :siam:

Khaw came from Chung Ling. Many of my Malaysian friends were from Chung Ling.

Anyway, pls note he is in his early 60s. Colombo Plan was THE in-thing during his generation.

Think let's don't narrow our view by looking at the public sector. Do look at the top honchos in the private sectors too.

Yalor. I was wondering how come politicians become a benchmark for success.

Almost everyone I know at RI strives to be the best they can be, to get the best learning experience they can fr the school. That environment is something I appreciate. Opportunities are aplenty, no doubt. Some of these opportunities are not found in other jc.

Because they strive for the best, they also strive to go to the best unis offering their desired course.

Scholarships and being top doesn’t matter to everyone. However it matters to some. I know of student A and student B who have both gained admission to top uni in UK, student A to a more difficult and highly sought after course. Student B is already making accommodation prep and can’t understand why student A isn’t doing that cos getting accommodation is pretty competitive there too. The reason is because without a scholarship, student A can’t afford to go. And student B exclaimed why would student A want a scholarship and be bonded?

This shows there are many who do not understand the value of a scholarship simply because they do not need one. Period.
