PSLE grading will also no longer be based on how pupils do relative to their peers, as it is now, he explained, adding that the hope is that this will encourage students to focus on their own learning rather than competing to do better than their peers.
Why does this mean?

It's only as scary as one makes it out to be. Most kids are normal kids - not the exceptional art/music talents, and most will qualify via PSLE results.

            Why does this mean?
Now it favours those subject specialists whose score is way above the national average. This candidate benefits under the old system, no?

Oops, \"subject specialists\" will be shortchanged.

                Zappy:
Looks like DSA Academic is on its way out too...

                http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/sin ... 76764.html

\"...the ministry aims to sharpen the focus of the DSA to better recognise talents and achievements in specific domains, rather than general academic ability that can be demonstrated through the PSLE.\"
No, not on its way 'out'...It cannot be 'out', because PM never said 'out' in 2013 NDR speech.

                NCM only said:
Meanwhile, the Direct School Admission (DSA) scheme, which was introduced in 2004 to promote holistic education for students, will undergo a review to bring it back to its original policy intent, said Mr Ng, who noted “some unevenness in how different schools select their DSA students”.

The review will seek to open up more options in more secondary schools for students with specific aptitudes and talents to nurture their interests and talents. The MOE will also try to “sharpen the focus” of the scheme to better recognise students’ talents and achievements in specific domains, rather than looking only at their general academic ability as reflected by PSLE scores.
I hope he can expand on this in 2-3 months' time as he has promised to do so this morning in Parl:

                1. \"Meanwhile\" - so after MOE's review, how will this affect candidates taking PSLE before 2021? That is, will the tweaked DSA to place more emphasis on non-academic abilities apply to 2017-2020 batches? Or only kicks in in 2021?

                2. In 2015, HSK mentioned 2 programmes will be developed by the secondary schools to let students have more choices. NCM didn't elaborate on what programmes these are.

                http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/more-secondary-education/2067184.html

Will they be available to the 2017-2020 batches?

                3. I note the word \"general\" in \"general academic ability\". Currently, if I'm not wrong, DSA thru academic is not via \"general\" ability, right? Thought it's through 1 specialised subject, say English or Math?? :scratchhead: Those with generally good grades won't even stand a chance vs those with special MO awards or SO awards?

                4. Will DSA Academic domain be totally removed? If yes, when? 2021? Or anytime now 2017 till 2020? I note the use of \"Meanwhile...\" 😓

                5. How will this affect GEP applicants, if this domain is to be removed or downplayed?

                6. If the new DSA selection criteria is to be implemented anytime before 2021, what are the things students due for PSLE2017-2020 should look out for in terms of CCA commitments, special talent development, achievements? Can he give us some heads-up?

                    No la...

                    only said \"holistic\"...

This implies academics will be significantly downplayed, so obviously non-academic abilities will become more impt.

Why it sounds like it is going to be more stressful than the current psle system leh...I must be in the dark again :nailbite:

                        Superstressed:
I have no idea why the author said majority of the parents whom she interviewed welcomed the swopping of t-score with grades banding. So far, from the letters published in ST forums, & KSP postings, majority have serious doubts how can the swop help to reduce PSLE stress. Or it's just cosmetic changes.

Among my mummy friends whose children are going to take PSLE in 1-2 years time, they would rather see a more even distribution of resources allocated among the schools, including the good (quality) teachers among the neighbourhood and branded schools.

I don't think the stress will be reduced. If anything, it probably will spike.

agree with you, stress level escalate further, as children need to choose a Cca & join a Cca, much earlier.
Why ? because certain Cca are very popular, in hot demand.
if don't join earlier, by the time they reach P3, slim chance of entering a popular Cca.

today, 2016 Primary 1 students are going to be the pioneering 1st batch, to experience take off of the new PSLE Banding system, in 2021.
2021 also happen to be the turn of the next new decade (from 2021 to 2029)

P1 students need to start planning ahead, which Cca they interested in, go and try out.
More Ks...... Mummies pregnant with babies should start reading up and decide which CCA to DSA into preferred school. Hire the best coach. Book the coach.... Hahahaha :rotflmao:
