Hi Parents, ever since the start of sch, i notice my dd spending more time on her phone, groupchat with frens than on her schoolworks. Each day, she can easily get 1000+ msgs. I'm sure not all are impt msg. I find it disruptive n taking too much of her time. It is not possible for me to restrict her cos i know sometimes the teachers communicate homeworks, change of classes, other info via watsapp. In fact i m quite surprise that njc isn't strict with hp usage in sch. In my dd's instagram, i always see selfie photos of students in the class or other sch area. i dislike the idea of using phone in school cos it is a distraction. Last wk, her math quiz came back with 7/20 result. Not sure if it is due to excessive use of hp. What should i do? Shld i reflect my concern to the sch?

I don't think it's not possible to control use of the phone. The info is not so time-critical that delaying reading it for 1 hr is going to make much difference. My daughters are in JC level now, and we have always had a rule that they do not constantly access their phones, especially when doing homework. Initially, we allowed them to check after 1 hr, limited to 5-10 mins (strictly controlled). After that, we allowed them to use their good sense and develop self-control. One of my daughters spends more time than I would like on her phone (busy social life!), but she still does not check while doing homework, and seems to be in control of things, so I don't interfere. You may want to encourage your daughter to get out of unnecessary group chats, and \"train\" her friends not to expect instant replies to all their messages. And if something is really urgent, they can phone!

Time mgt is a skill every child must learn to master.
I suppose the Parent Teacher meeting is a good time to reflect your concerns.
In the meantime, do counsel your dd.

Hi bumbum, I empathise w ur circumstance & agree w Jennifer & slmkhoo. Hope e 06Apr Parent-Teacher session was useful. Actually I believe Mr Sham did speak to e JH1s about WhatsApp chat groups mid of Term 1. In fact, there are children without devices & e school can accommodate.

You may want to think about e below:
        (1) Check ur dc's devices (esp apps like WhatsApp) on a regular basis, but don't give dc a chance to delete msgs beforehand (so do a spot check).
        (2) Dc should, preferably, only join groups which have teachers.
(House chat groups consist of numerous members & tend to span different years, so those should be prohibited as well. Under peer pressure, u could intervene covertly/subtly. Empower ur child so tt dc can win ur trust & eventually manage herself.
I would ask dc to quote me. For instance, \"I am so-&-so's parent. I have decided tt dc should quit this chat group. If there are any issues, please let me know & we can discuss.\" If e group still adds dc back after dc leaves it, suggest to them tt u will be informing Mr Sham).
        (3) Block spammers.
        (4) The devices should be in silent mode at most times & should be far away from study & dining tables.
Tell dc tt failure to adhere would mean tt devices will be confiscated for a term. This works well cos no one wants to lug the humongous Maths textbook to school everyday! 😛

Good to hear that there is the option of not having devices at NJC (if I read one of the responses correctly).

By the way, is the date for NJC’s Open House this year out yet? No mention on the school website when I last checked. Thanks.

Thanks iRabbit. Just popping by for final look see, and to find out if there are any changes to the DSA criteria (most likely not, since some schools already held their Open Houses).

NUSH DSA application has oredi started. It'll be really cruel to tweak the rules now but stranger things have happened. :xedfingers:

I donch think there are much changes in the process vs previous years. There will be some baseline which the kids have to meet but the chance of one getting a CO really depends on how you fare against the competition.
