      Schellen,

I don't understand the need to get a pass to go to the loo...shouldn't the child be allowed to go to the loo if there is a need ? My friend's son needs to 'borrow' his friend's pass to the loo, esp now with hot weather and drinking more water.
Why does your friend's son need to borrow a fellow classmates's pass? You mean each child gets a pass to keep?

What I meant was that each teacher has 2 passes and she/he issues them to those who need to leave the class during lessons. The passes prove that they are granted permission and are not loitering or wandering. I'm not sure about pri schs but it's common for sec schs, to prevent the students from creating trouble and to account for their whereabouts during lessons. For example, should something happen while the student is away from his/her class during lesson time, the first thing that will be verified is why is this student walking about and does he/she have permission.

        janet,

From what i read from the Nan Chiau network thread, the kids there take higher chinese from P1 onwards. That’s why i am wondering what’s the difference between schools like this which is non-SAP and those SAP-schools.

          Hi Schellen,

That’s precisely what my friend told me…her son has to borrow friend’s pass to go to the loo. Her son is taking Higher Chinese as he did pretty well for P4 Chinese. Lots of additional notes to write during class and, have to write fast.

          b2b3m4,
I’m also wondering what is the difference between SAP and non-SAP schools if the latter allows students to use Higher Chinese.

            Hi everyone.

I am a new mom to this forum and my son will be registering for P1 this year.

As a very un-kiasu mom, I have not done any PV or research till today…we live very near Hong Wen, but am worried my son will struggle with the Chinese standard as my hbs and I can hardly speak Chinese properly…much to our dismay.

However, my son seems to enjoy Chinese in Kindie…

            Any advice?

              Hi pinchmycheeks,
My hubby & I do not speak Mandarin at home either...we do not have the habit of doing so.
We stay within 1km to Pei Hwa, which is a SAP school. Son has CL (group) tuition since K2...switching to one-to-one in P1. I focused a lot of time on his Chinese bcos it's Higher CL and neglected his English (hubby teaches Math). He is in P4 this year.

If you're not working, then perhaps you can coach him as you also learn along the way.

                hi,
sometimes I wonder if I'd shortchanged my girl by not balloting for tns and instead sent her to hgs(no regrets at hgs though). Our reasons then were exactly like yours, worrying if she can cope since we rarely speak the lang at home.

when it came my son's turn, we followed the registration process closely, and registered him at the last hour when we were sure there wasnt a need for ballot. Surprisingly, though we still dont speak the lang at home, he survived HCL thru his pri school year, even scoring a merit for HCL and a A for CL at last year's psle. He went for Molin tuition and at home, I read ci yu and did spelling with him. That's all. He's now doing HCL in sec.

Sharing this with ya, is not to show off. Anyway, nothg to show off la.. he didnt get distinction or A*. But to encourage you that kids absorb knowledge and language like a sponge. Moreover, yr son seems to enjoy chinese, that's an obstacle cleared.

                Gd luck to your registration.

                  Hi Mathsparks,

I’m sure you’re not showing off, but to illustrate a case.

How did you coach your son in HCL in primary school ? Could you share with me please ? What is Molin tuition ?

                    hi janet,

I only read weekly ci yu with him, plus test spelling. even then, I wasnt very consistent.

He was with Molin (at Katong) for tuition since kindy. From p3 till p6, he joined their writing classes. And in p6, he joined han language for oral.

Molin is a Chinese enrichment centre situated in the East, somewhere near Katong Shopping Centre and Roxy Sq area. It is very popular amongst students of SAP schools in the East such as Tao Nan and Kong Hwa. Most of their teachers are Chinese nationals.
