Are Hanyu Pinyin and spelling taught in the MOE Kindergartens?

The focus of language learning in the pre-school years is on developing the listening and speaking skills of children. This will lay the foundation for language learning in later years. Hanyu Pinyin is part of the Primary 1 curriculum and children will be taught when they start formal schooling.

Word recognition should be taught in context, so children are not given word or spelling lists to memorise. Instead, children at the MOE Kindergartens will learn words in context so that they understand the meaning of the words and make use of them in their speech and writing.

Can share if the curriculum at punggol view is gd? Is it very basic? How is it compared to pcf at punggol blk 303?

On choosing MOE Kindy, parents must like the fact that there will be no spelling, little handwriting practise, near to zero homework (with perhaps parents-child project to work at home). In my opinion, it is a play based curriculum that is trying to work out as good as the "branded" preschools. There are class projects that get students to research, explore and present. Reading programme in English and Mother Tongue is decent. (I, for one would prefer a child to learn to recognise Chinese characters before hanyupinyin. Likewise, no spelling is fine as long as the child know how to form a word by sound or memory etc.)

As there may not be alot of handwriting exercise for students, parents will have to do the job at home . Unless MOE decides to change the Primary One curriculum to match their kindy’s curriculum, parents will still need to work with their child to get them ready for Primary One i.e. Read, Write and Spell.

IMHO i have not heard of any 3-4 hrs kindergarten that prepare the kid well for primary 1. the parent need to do the job at home

You may want to check out Sparkletots. Perhaps not all branches are the same but they do prepare the children well enough for P1.
