topics such as environment, food web etc, good to read sc textbook, old or new, to have a better idea. šŸ˜„

'Environment' and 'food web' are heavy topics...lots of stuff to remember. Until now, I still can't remember differences between different communities.

It is good to read the textbook for this topic. The textbook has pictures and more illustrations that will definitely help in better understanding of the whole topic...like reading a story book.
if you read only the summary in assessment books, you may feel the topic is very heavy. šŸ˜„[/quote]There are many kid's magazines on these 2 topics. When they read it frequently, the concepts and knowledge become internalised.

Janet, if your DD has problems retaining just by reading, try getting her to do her own mindmaps for science topics. When they read the info and draw the mindmap or some may call info web, it helps them remember and relate and thus better retention. Doing assessments after assessments will not help much as for most kids, it is either I get it right or I get it wrong.

Most of the science magazines for kids have comics to illustrate science concepts. Although funny and heartening, the magazines do not go in-depth into the topic.

When time is running out, reading textbook to get general ideas for the topic. Then reading thr assessment book such as UB Sc FAQ to grab the key words or key concepts needed for the topic. After that, try doing some exam qns to see how well you know the topic

Comics are fun to read...less dry. But still have to attempt questions to assess understanding. Daughter uses science companion...thin booklet per topic. I give her bite sized assessment from Gradual Science to do during MT.

Use those magazines to stir interest and then go more in-depth with them. That's what I do whenever time permits.

if i get her to do assessment, have to explain mistakes she makes or else it just be repeated when she sees the same kind of questions.

thank goodness for a public holiday 2moro...other than timing her for math paper 1, hubby will sit through paper 2 with her.

We also went slow today. Somehow ds managed to plonk in front of his comp for 4 hrs playing his fav games. Compared to that, I would have preferred him to go outdoors.
