      Oh My Gosh:

What are the difference in commitments if DS DSA via General Academics or DSA via specific domains e.g. Maths/ Science/ English? Which is easier to DSA?

      Hi Oh My Gosh,

My 2 DDs in DHS. They enjoy their time there. They make many good friends who support one another. Workload is considered heavy with projects and lots of CCA involvement.
Seeing that they mix with a group of well-behaved friends/classmates definitely set my heart at ease.

My DD2 DSA into DHS. As long as you can meet their requirement, for the DSA online registration, you can \"tick\" a few domains. We applied under General, Academics and Performing Arts. My DD went for the audition and interview under performing arts, however, she was offered under General. It turns out fine because my DD happily chooses another CCA which she loves a lot too.

There is no commitment for DSA General except to stay in the school (no transfer to other school).

Just go for it so you will not regret. Never try, never know.
Even if DSA is not successful, believe in your kids and encourage them work hard for PSLE and they may just get into their dream school via S1 posting.

Thank you. Any idea how is the interview process like for DHS DSA, what kind of questions do they asked, etc?

One more question ... I heard that debate club only qualifies as 2nd CCA in DHS. Why is this so? Is it because the debate club is inactive and so not able to utilise the students' time?

DHS has a criteria that the kid has to choose a 1st CCA, be it sports or music or uniform group. Interest group like debate (known as oratorical society) qualifies as a 2nd CCA. Depending on one's commitment on 1st CCA, the kid may / may not have time for 2nd CCA.

When we were at the Open House, we were told that for junior high, Art, Infocomm and Robotics Club are offered as the main CCA. So it is not limited to sports, uniformed group or performing arts.

Hi! Any parent’s kid using DSA Basketball for Dunman High? How is their training? Do the teacher and coach care about their players’ School Work? Any support from the school teachers and coach, when the player cannot cope? Thank you

After the English test, they went in groups to various classrooms and waited to be called in for 1-1 interview.
My DD2 told me a few questions like \"what other schools did you DSA\", \"which will be your 1st choice school\", \"did you visit during the open house\", \"what did you like or dislike about it\". Interview mainly in English but may have 1-2 questions in Chinese.

Some interviews may have 2-3 teachers.

Dun quite understand the new education system… join CCA also must selection/ interview, to be prefect also must selection/ interview, to join BICEP program also must selection/ interview, DSA also must selection/ interview. Somehow, I pity kids nowadays… stressful life.

DSA registration ongoing... parents with kids in DHS, can you provide a overview of how you feel about your kids there? Any regrets or re considerations if given another chance? TIA!

                  Hi Oh My Gosh

DD Dsa to DHS via General two years ago. She is currently in Yr 2 and very very happy with the choice she made. In fact, most of her pri school classmates choose to return to their secondary section (she came from a pri school with a secondary section), and she was one of a handful from her pri school that chooses DHS instead. She has never looked back since then. I guess the reason is because the school offers a very conducive environment. Help is always available as long as you ask for it, whether it is consultations with the teachers or asking her seniors for notes. As they like to call it - 一个大家庭。

As for Dsa via general or academic, DD never participated in any maths Olympiad or major science competitions except for the commonwealth essay writing competition. Hence we tried Dsa via general. My two cents worth - look at the criteria for each Dsa category before you decide which route to take. It would also b good to bring your DC to the open house this Sat 28 May. The talk by the principal gives good insight into the Dsa selection process n what to expect in this school if your child is accepted.

Hope it helps and all the best to your child!

Sorry, I mean what is the difference in commitments for DSA via General Academics or DSA via Specific Academics (e.g. Maths and Science)?

In fact, once you are accepted, you are just like everybody else in the school. No extra commitment as in workload or activities.

My dd is in another sports cca (via dsa), not basketball. Generally I feel that teachers-in-charge and coaches focus more on the sports itself (training, competition etc). As for academic, if one can't cope, the school has supplementary prog to help. In any case, you can always bring the case to the attention of the teachers-in-charge, year head or even the Principal to come up with a plan to help your child. Of course, your child will have to try his/her best to work very hard.

                        Hope this helps.
