I would like to find news/magazine articles to expose my son to read on a daily basis. Is there any recommendation on when I can get a daily dose of such articles?

I am not so sure about magazine, but for news, you can go to the straits time link http://www.straitstimes.com/ or http://www.todayonline.com/, or you can get hardcopy newspapers at any retail stores.

Are there any useful strategies for 短文填空?

This is one segment that my potato boy keeps losing marks. I am able to help him in other segments except this, as his Chinese vocabulary is not strong.

          Thanks in advance…

              2)“竟然” and \"居然“?
              Hi PSLEstress,
              1) 的 precedes nouns
              敬爱的总理、慈祥的老人、戴帽子的男孩、珍贵的教科书、鸟的天堂、伟大的祖国、有趣的情节、
              优雅的环境、可疑的情况、团结友爱的集体、他的妈妈、可爱的花儿、谁的橡皮、清清的河水

              地 precedes verbs/actions

              http://zhidao.baidu.com/question/358066053.html

              2) 竟然 和 居然
Both are adverbs; meaning unexpectedly (出乎意料)
              居然 is more emphatic (语气略重)

              例句:
              今天聚会你居然不到。
              这么重要的事,你居然忘了。”
              你居然来了!(nuance: 我不希望你来,你厚着脸皮来了)
              你竟然来了!(nuance: 我本来希望你来,但没想到你真来了)

Will update when I find more examples of 竟然 & 居然. Hope this helps.

                  Hi PSLEstress, As agreed... 🙂
                  竟然 和 居然 的例句:
                  美国竟然不顾全世界的反对,公然对伊拉克动武!
                  天气这么热,竟然还有人穿棉袄
                  数学成绩优异的小明这次考试竟然不及格,太令人意外了.
                  我听课一直很认真,但今天居然走神了。
                  我一直都很相信你,但没有想到你居然欺骗了我。

Hi PSLEstress, If I were to make a guess, there won't be any question requiring u to choose between the 2. Reason is bcos these 2 words very often may be used interchangeably. Superfluous examples r only for reference.

                        Hi!
Most primary schools in Singapore subscribe to newspapers (such as 《好朋友》、《知识画报》、《知识报》、《小拇指》和《大拇指》) for their Chinese students. If your child's sch does not subscribe these newspapers, you can check the following websites to see if you can read the content online or you can subscribe yourself.
                        1) 《好朋友》、《知识画报》、《知识报》: https://www.ezhishi.net/
                        2)《小拇指》、《大拇指》: http://www.zbcomma.sg/
                        8228:
Hi, does anyone know the marking scheme of the comprehension? Looking at my dc's practice and exam papers, I noticed that certain 3 or 4 marks questions were given very low marks although the answers were quite closed to the model answers. TIA.
                        Hi!
The only mark scheme that I'm aware of is that for each question:
                        1) 2 wrong words will deduct 0.5 marks. But if that 1 wrong word will affect the meaning of the sentence, the teachers can also deduct 0.5 marks immediately.
                        2) Wrong sentence structure (not fluent), a minimum of 0.5 marks will be deducted.
                        3) Wrong pronoun or include pronoun for the \"fill-in-table\" question, 0.5 marks will be deducted.
                        4) Write more than necessary, marks will also be deducted.

Some parents do have similar misconception that if my child's answers are similar to the model answers, he or she should be given more marks.

Marks are not given based on the keywords alone, but whether the children understand the passage and the through the formation of the sentences, able to convey the message clearly is what the teachers are looking out for.

Unlike English compre where children need to rephrase the sentences, the children can copy the sentences (changing the pronoun to a third-person perspective). Some children can be 'kay kiang' and answer based on their own understanding, which will of course cost him or her marks.
