MdmKS:
at NJC, all students will have a equal chance to experience the highly subsidized boarding program? It is part of their program?
I only know that JH1 has one term of compulsory boarding which is in Term 4. But no idea what's in the package. Hv not seen the place either. Only know it is 2 to a room. -
MdmKS:
If your child is a GEPer and he gets promoted to Sec GEP, his fees are highly subsidized up to $2400 per year. If does very well in PSLE, he is entitled to EESIS which also subsidized up to $2400 per yr. Each child only 1 form of subsidy. The Raffles schs are the most expensive and parents would need to pay abt $100 per month after subsidy. However there is financial help available. For the other indept schs, fees are much lower and you end up paying abt the same as the govt sch if your son qualifies for GEP promotion/ EESIS.xxjustakidxx:
Not really, HCI has its own Integrated boarding programme. But that one's expensive and not compulsary.
Hi all, sorry I am just back to this site after a long break and suddenly notice so many people response to my query, a big :thankyou: to all.
Pls allow me to clarify, am I right to say that at NJC, all students will have a equal chance to experience the highly subsidized boarding program? It is part of their program? Whereas in HCI boarding programe is only open to certain students and to join volunteering need to pay a lot? I am keen at NJC due to the gov rate as I am unsure how long I can support the expensive independent school fee. One more question about NJC,pls. what is the population of primary GEP students there like? Do they have a seperate program?
That is, fees should not be a detering factor. Choose the school that best suit your child. -

Parents, pls note that the independent school fees increase every two years till ( > $400 per month) yr 6 while EESIS only cap at 2400 a year, which mean if one does not qualify for financial assistance (total family income < $1500 a month), one has to continue to pay for the balance. If your child is a GEPer and he gets promoted to Sec GEP, his fees are highly subsidized up to $2400 per year. Equal chance is not the correct word, there is no balloting per se.

In fact, the highly subsidized boarding program in NJC is COMPULSORY to all students. All students will have to board 1 term each year. 1 term = 10 weeks
Timing are as follows:
Sec 1 (JH1) = Term 4,
Sec 2 (JH2) = Term 1,
Sec 3 (JH3) = Term 3,
Sec 4 (JH4) = Term 2
Hope this clarify any doubt that you may have -
My boy came back saying squash got too many participants, so the teacher has transferred him to his 3rd choice. Phew. No need to travel to dunnowhere and come home late liao.

but when they allocate, they already know how many. How come like that? -

No idea. Maybe they overestimated the availability of facilities?Jennifer:

Anyone here has child taking MEP at NJC. Was the selection base on grade 3 practical and theory ? How is the course so far? Any dropouts in current sec 1 and 2 so far?

My ds is doing MEP at NJC. There is a theory & aural test. The aural test is v difficult - not like the usual. And the child has to perform a piece just for the teacher to guage.
The class size per year is very small. I think most got thru the selection tests (like 12 out of 15), but there was natural attrition. By the start of Term 2, only 8 were left for this year's JH1s (sec 1s). There should be no more drop-outs until end of jH2(sec 2) unless they are not coping and the teachers would \"kick them out\" (rare lah). Most would continue until year 4 at least before deciding whether they want to offer it as an A-level subject.
My ds is enjoying Mep. He also joined a music cca altho it's not compulsory (hv to audition for this). If your child is playing piano, NJC has a unique group - the piano ensemble. My son just performed with the orchestra and the piano ensemble at esplanade last night (part of CCA, not MEP).
Oh, and here's more info for you to look through. nJC MEP: http://www.njc.edu.sg/education_music.htm
A silly write-up by one batch of MEP students:
