Wonder how will the first batch of children know what is the cut off point for each of the school, if there is no precedent result. So, it becomes a guessing game?

This is indeed a positive step in MOE’s effort to reduce our current education system’s emphasis on grades.

Instead of spending a great deal of effort gunning for the 99th mark, which according to the law of diminishing returns, will be a lot tougher to achieve than simply aiming to get a score of 90 and above. Students can now spend the saved time and effort elsewhere instead. I foresee potentially good benefits for our next generation of primary school kids if the implementation is not bungled.

I think it is equally challenging to aim for 90 and above for all 4 subjects. It would be roughly equivalent to a psle score of 270 right?

Not really - the current system the t-score is calculated on a comparative basis while the new system is based on raw score so difficult to \"convert\" per se.

Secondary school will be based on Lady Luck for quite a lot of students from henceforth… What a terrible system! Instead of having it based on meritocracy - gambling (balloting) has now been introduced!! This really sounds like changing for the sake of changing! Duh!

I am so glad my youngest is in P2 and under the old system!!

Agree. Let's stay positive - It's too early for the doom and gloom show! 😄

Thank you. Most of the gloomy predictions here are simply a knee jerk reaction to something new and confusing. I feel that the new system needs time to show benefits and until then we should simply wait and allow MOE to make the necessary tweaks during implementation.

                    Pen88n:

Yearly PSLE cohort of about 40,000 students on a range of 29 possible PSLE score range - on average, every score point has about 1,379 students  That is not even taking into consideration the lower level range (28-32) may not have as many students, so the mid to high range may be having more students.

Now, consider that most mid to top school cohort averages around 400 per school, :yikes: ouch......I really foresee keen competition going forward! 😓 :nailbite: (heng ahh.....over liao!!! 😉 )

Actually I think we will end up depending on lady luck. If among those who get 4 points, then become lucky draw like balloting for flats. In theory, the new system makes it harder to differentiate the kids so it could actually pan out such that the 2021 top scorer may not get his first choice, unlike today.

DSA via academic may be the loophole around this so hopefully they will put a stop to that.

Of course, they could muck it up like the 'O' levels and introducing more bonus points (take HMT ? -2 points, CCA distinction? -2 points etc). Given that in the new system, HMT only benefits those who want to go to SAP schools, I am hopeful this won't happen.

So we are moving away from a system of meritocracy to a system of luck (aka \"heng suay\" system)? :faint:

The top scorer may not get his 1st choice by balloting, and maybe not even his 2nd or 3rd or 4th choice  (since those schools may be others 1st choice and already all vacancies balloted and taken). Sorry to say this, but I simply cannot understand how this system can be considered fair in this case :scratchhead:

If using raw score instead of bell curve, how to ensure all MTs equally difficult/easy?
