What are your views about the new psle system ?

Luckily, our batch (2007) escape this

Find the new 2021 psle banding system, so ridiculous !
Fancy subjecting the kids under the same band to balloting.
no difference from gambling away your kid's education, based on the LUCK of your child.
      ....
As a parent, if you tell your child to study hard for his / her future, your child can retort back, \"Dad / Mom, What is the point of studying so hard now, when admission into Secondary school, is based upon sheer luck during \"gambling of chances\"? It is no longer dependent on your Total score.
It is LUCK that is going to determine the future of your Secondary school, not based on your hard work self-disciplined study \"
I think a child should put in his best effort even if he cannot select his school and if my child says that to me, he is going to be hearing a lot from me on how myopic and short sighted he is.

That aside, it will be naive to imagine that everyone can easily achieve a good banding under the new system and the balloting is another way to \"even out\" schools and isn't that what some forumites have been screaming for?

Anyway, nothing to do with our kids.

For all 4 subjects to score at least 90 marks without moderation is difficult…the poor kid has to be a well rounded in all 4 subjects…i hope that they do the moderation.

Lucky, our kids not in this batch

I agree with you. Our batch of those children born in 2007 will take PSLE in 2019. Unaffected by the change. Very \"Heng\"!!!

          Why do I say that?

If my child is under the AL score, can perform in English, Math, Science and get above 92, that is confirm 3 X AL 1 = 3 points. Now, if my child is weak in Chinese, she just get 4 points for AL4 for scoring 75 marks. 4 + 3 = 7 points!!

Will definitely pull down the overall score as this is RAW score.

Our batch of those born 2007 escaped this new PSLE AL system. Our batch is based on T-score, not based on raw score. Under the T-score system, can use the marks for stronger subjects such as English, Maths and Science to make up for the weakest subject Chinese. But under the new PSLE AL system, you cannot do this anymore.

            Hi,

Worried about the upcoming Chinese oral…the school adopting new format of using video strips(printed on paper) followed by conversation. Compared to picture discussion, seems more difficult. And less resource to practice too…

              So true !

Chinese subject alone now can determine whether a child Can go to IP school, or to an ordinary, O level school

              Example

Suppose a P6 student is strong in 3 subjects (English, Maths, Science) :
scored AL band 1 for each of these 3 subjects, but weak in Chinese, scored AL Band 7 for Chinese, despite putting in long hours of effort to learn Chinese & doing his best, he end up as a 10-pointer.

In the end, this student got posted to a 10-pointer \"O\" level normal school, instead of continue being challenged intellectually, had he been posted to a 4-pointer IP school. See the big difference ?
His fate has now altered, because the system has changed, from T-score to AL.

              Under AL :
even though he is strong in 3 out of 4 subjects, unfortunately his 3 strong subjects can't do anything to help him \"pull up\" his Chinese.

So, got posted to 10-pointer O level school, instead of 4-pointer IP school

              Under AL (new system) :
kid must be an All Rounder.
That's what the 4-pointer IP schools are looking for !

Not easy to get into dream school of 4-pointer now, with the change, if don't have DSA offer prior to sitting Psle.

              For average students :
If have affliated Secondary school awaiting, safer to go back affliated school, rather than run the risk of facing computerised balloting to an unknown school posting

picture discussion easier : picture doesn't move

whereas video : the images keep moving, one after another.
got to remember what image came after another, so just got to click the <Replay> button a few times, to try to recall.

GEP English test was easy but GEP Math was very difficult to my child. First time she is telling me that Math is difficult! I think it must really be difficult! What did your child comment after GEP tests?

Dd said Eng is more difficult but you can discount it coz her Eng is weak…according to her few friends mentioned Math is more difficult.
