Why you say the syllabus is shifting away from this type of writing ?
Thought although new eng Compo psle format is 3 picture, instead of old format 4 picture, however the content doesn’t matter, whether given 3 or 4 pic.
Can use any of the 3 pic given, to write. -
phtthp:
Don't need to use all pics, but content must reflect theme. If it doesn't reflect the theme, you will fail your content component right away and you will be looking at a very low score, NO MATTER how exciting the story is. A lot of kids starting on the new format are doing very badly because they do not understand how to convey the theme. Why you say the syllabus is shifting away from this type of writing ?

When you read the work, you must be able to pick out the theme clearly.
The new format requires more maturity, not just a string of descriptions. Not easy at all. -
Agree.
If the theme given was "luck", for instance, it would fit in beautifully here, because without luck, escape from death will be impossible. With the new syllabus, lack of adherence to the theme (plus minimally one picture) would imply off - point, I suppose.
The essay should leave the reader with the impression that without "luck", all would be naught, which is demonstrated in this essay. -
In the new psle english Compo : 3 pic are given.
Students were told that they can use 1, 2 or all 3 pic given, to write their composition.
But, will there be a situation whereby : what if out of 3 pic given -
all 3 are on different, separate theme ?
Ie. they do not belong to the Same theme.
does it mean that if I select only one given pic to write the essay, thereby covering only 1 theme, did not touch the other 2 theme, because did not Even make use of the other 2 given pic :
Will I pass or fail my composition, written ?
That is, I wrote out of point, because never cover the other 2 Theme ?
OR
Is it that whenever SEAB set composition psle exam, those 3 picture given -
Must Always belong to the SAME Theme : since Theme is so important now, under the New Psle format ? -

\"Part 2 (Continuous Writing): Candidates will be required to write a composition of at least
150 words in continuous prose on a given topic. Three pictures will be provided on the
topic offering different angles of interpretation. Candidates may also come up with their
own interpretation of the topic. \"
Based on the above, we can surmise that there will be 1 theme / topic given (e.g. a dilemma, a lucky break etc). 3 pictures will be provided, each with a different possible take on the theme provided, thus implying there are 3 angles of approach candidate can adopt in interpreting the theme. To use all 3 will be unnecessary, and likely to be contrived. More importantly, it stifles the development of the story and hence, limiting the uniqueness of the composition as compared to other candidates. The expectation, though, is on adherence to the theme (with the picture as one plausible approach).
Interestingly though, almost all tuition / enrichment centers state that the composition should fulfill two criteria:
- centered on the theme +
- use of at least one picture
Yet, SEAB's description of the composition suggests that candidates need not use any of the 3 pictures and can \"come up with their own interpretation of the topic \" . :scratchhead:
At this juncture, because DD is still following the old format at P3, so I'm not sure how the school interprets SEAB's description. Probably those who children are in P6 this year (or last year) will be able to share what's the school's interpretation. -

How about going for this? -
My dd learnt the new format for composition (based on 2015 English PSLE syllabus) last year in outside enrichment. In school last year, she was doing the 4 pic composition in P2. Not really fantastic grade then. Then this year, P3, she took to the new format like a duck takes to water and could write much better for the new format type Compo as compared to old traditional format. The new type Compo requires more creativity. In addition, you have to use "showing" technique, not "telling" technique for P3 Compo based on the new PSLE English format of 3 pics.

- Pic 1 (show 2 girl students whispering),
- Pic 2 (show a secret letter),
- Pic 3 (show secret 'out of bounds' location)?
in this example, it is clear that the central Theme is about \"Secret\" (especially from Pic 2).
Then, it is up to P6 students to weave a plot / storyline out of the Theme : what hush-hush \"Secret\" is it all about ?
however, in other composition assessment books available at Popular book store branches :
the 3 Pic given may be un-related, not so simple to form a common Theme, to try link the 3 Pic up. -

can give an example of a composition : what's the difference between \"showing\" technique vs. \"telling\" technique ?My dd learnt the new format for composition (based on 2015 English PSLE syllabus) last year in outside enrichment. (don't quite understand this part) -
this year (2016) : the PSLE Composition Topic on \"Secret\", is very interesting !
P6ers can use their wild imagination, to weave various type of creative plot, around \"Secret\", and write about it.
pondering ... :?
besides \"Secret\", what other similar Topic(s) : can involve mature-thinking, corporate world type of situation, happening ?
(PSLE is only ... 3 years away from now, soon our piggies will reach ... 2019. Time pass very quickly, day by day. Recall that it wasn't too long ago, that we started out Primary 1 together, after leaving kindergarten K2)
