MrsKiasu:
how do we get our kids exposed to some MO qns?can just buy any MO book from Popular and do it at own leisure? or must/better get a tutor/tuition ctr to decode/help kids understand the solution?
Not sure about other schools but for Nan Chiau, the kids who are stronger in Maths are offered MO lessons in school from P3. My son attended till P5 so do benefited a lot. -
I do not intend to discuss the ans here. My son keep thinking that he has missed these questions during the math exam (skip the pages) . He needs to confirm that he had done. He cannot get over it.

I bought the MO books from popular and taught dd from P1. I tried to do at least a few questions a day.
When the questions got tougher, i sent her to Maths Hub in P4. In P5, she told me she has lost interest in MO and i stopped the class. I think interest is necessary to motivate the child to continue to learn.
guess we need to buy MO for P1 when dd is in P4..nevertheless think better take a look and give a try before her psle :nailbite:

See lah, that's the problem. My DD's school also has a similar arrangement for the top 2 classes.MrsKiasu:

My point is, PSLE come out some MO type of questions, the better students benefit as they have been exposed to such questions previously, whereas the not so strong students may suffer unfairly. Is the PSLE still a fair assessment given some students have been taught and some have not??? -

My point is, PSLE come out some MO type of questions, the better students benefit as they have been exposed to such questions previously, whereas the not so strong students may suffer unfairly. Is the PSLE still a fair assessment given some students have been taught and some have not???[/quote]The fact is the not so strong students may be already trying to grasp the syllabus rather than having to consider to expose to more out of box thinking questions.
I know of a kid in a top school struggling with maths cos the school is constantly giving beyond syllabus exposure and the kid is not catching up. Do not understand and cannot see the connection, so case of \"today learn tomorrow forget\". The kid and parents were stressed trying to learn all these out of box questions (which might or might not come out in tests) and ended up neglecting the basics. Did badly for maths till a tutor finally told the mum and kid to concentrate on scoring for the basic questions in section A, B and C. For the difficult out of box questions, if can do some workings and earn a few marks here and there, it is a bonus. The kid fare better now, with better score, and more careful in doing basic questions without rushing to spend time on those out of box questions that may end up with wrong answers anyway.
The thing of exposing or not exposing the kids to such questions is really a case of whether the kids are ready to take on more. I trust that the schools should do the job of knowing if should expose the kid, and maybe the parents can gauge based on the standard of your kids too. Exposure is always good if your kid is strong in foundation, but if your kid is already struggling or not too good in that, you may want to think twice whether to add load or to consolidate foundation. -
The government on the one hand wants PSLE to be less stressful and not the defining moment of a childβs learning journey at the tender age of 12, but on the other hand, it sets MO kind of questions in PSLE. Knowing very well the kiasu mentality of Singaporean parents, once parents are aware that MO training is useful and the competitive edge offered, they will seek recourse in tuition. No wonder the tuition industry is growing and basically recession proof.

Agree about Singapore's tuition industry, it's becoming like a minimum necessity for most primary school kids. I've opted for tuition for my DD for her upper school years, not for the sake of being kiasu (as commonly misunderstood by many), but mainly to provide my DD an avenue to ask questions and get convincing answers. My DD complained that the subject teachers in her school are often too busy and stressed to answer any questions outside of the classroom, some even scorn when asked questions with blunt comments like \"Didn't I explain this in class before?\". (Though of course it depends on the commitment level of the teachers, but this is a common sight.)
Upon hearing this, I gave up on relying on school teachers to satisfy the thirst of my DD's learning, and am only glad to have found a nearby tuition centre with committed teachers who are open to answer questions even outside of their duty time. Of course the fees are a high price to pay, but it's one way I found to cope with the competitive education system in Singapore.
