Just curious, since PSLE is over and now is waiting for result and school selection, I would like to know if your kid standard is usually at around 240~250 and if he/she manage to get >260 for this PSLE, will you put him/her in the best possible school that he/she qualify with the T-score or you will stick with the school you have in mind or you think suit his/her ability before the result?

My take is if your child qualifies for IP schools, go for it. Don't fear that he/she will not survive especially in the top schools. Kids are very versatile - they will learn to adjust n adapt to challenging environments but more importantly have a chat with your child first, narrow down the top tier schools accordingly to priority followed by 2nd tier schools. He/she must be the one to make the selection n not the parents. Parents can and should give advice but ultimately, once the decision is made, be supportive and don't look back with regrets.

Once the child has decided, he/she will be very determined to do his/her best. Trust them!!!

From a 240-250 to become a >260, that is a great leap for the kid. I can understand as parent, you might be worried about whether this is a one-off, or can be sustained throughout secondary school. But I still think having this leap also shows the potential of the kid, and maybe PSLE has made him / her want to excel and perform to his / her best.

Personally, I would not recommend to put the kid in the best possible schools of the >260 range type, cos if he / she is stretched beyond potential, it might become a bigger problem. I would not recommend to leave the kid in the initial 240-250 range school that you think suit his / her ability either, cos I feel the kid might have the untapped potential to excel that he / she has exhibited for PSLE score. I would suggest considering an IP school in the 250s range for this kid, for it is giving him / her the chance to be stretched, but to a reasonable degree that he / she can possibly cope. If he / she has the potential to go beyond that, he will perform very well in that school too.

Just my personal opinion for your consideration.

IP school will be rather tough for a child who has 240-250 score. The syllabus is different from O level track and there are many projects to do. My friend has 2 children-one did very well to enter IP but she regretted allowing her daughter to take IP as the child has no life. Her other child did very well but took the o level track. There is more breathing space and not as pressurizing.

Does anyone remember the last question of the science paper? I think it’s something about a weight based circuit…

Q: What should the contacts of the lighting circuit be made of? Why?
A: Copper. Copper is a metal and it is a good conductor of electricity.
Q: Why did the engineer say it is not safe for the weighing scale with the lighting circuit to light up when the child is over 40kg limit but he says it should light up when the child is not 40 kg instead.
A: If the lighting circuit is spoilt, the lighting circuit will not light up and will not detect a child that is over the 40kg limit and who is not allowed on the ride because it is dangerous.
Q: What can be changed to a 40kg limit weighing scale connected to the lighting circuit, to increase the weight limit to 50kg.
A: Add more springs / change to a less elastic spring.

Am wondering if anyone can remember a question that’s something like below:


Q: There’s a picture of a pavement surrounded by warm soil. When cold air blows, the pavement cracks. Why is this so?

=> My daughter answered that the cold air causes the soil to contract, leaving less space for the pavement when it expands, causing it to crack…

I know it’s related to contraction/expansion but not sure how to explain the reasoning.

As a first-time \"PSLE mum\" I am totaly stunned that people are actually producing videos about the answers to the exam questions. What's done is done. let's move on. We are just torturing ourselves.

agreed…once paper is over, I do not wish to know how my child did, I am only interested to know that DD did her best!

For my DD, she appreciates these videos as she's always curious to learn new stuff and just wish to bring to a closure the question that is stuck in her mind, especially because she loves Science as a subject. So pre or post-PSLE, I will still entertain her questions.
