Can’t remember the marks, but think if all other subjects above 75, then no problem continuing with HCL if get 50/60? for HCL . Anyway, at end of P4, school just recommends the subject banding. Parents still get to decide. At end of P5, school will decide.

Hi Serendipity, jen, Perhaps it's this banding in question?
            https://www.moe.gov.sg/education/primary/subject-based-banding
If it is, my understanding (from hearsay) is tt e percentage = a fail of <20%? before e school'd recommend foundation.

Ya, school may recommend foundation subjects if the child not passing the subjects (not sure what marks, but should be less than 50). My impression is only a handful, if any, Nhps students, do the foundation subjects. So usual concern is the HCL.

There’s no need to buy optional items unless you want to get supplementary books for the child to read.

Hi, Concur with sunny... I assume the 2017 P1 booklist looks similar to the 2016's (school website not updated yet).
EL: Recommended books are not necessary, unless you happen to want to procure a copy for yourself ab initio.
MA: I haven't seen these Optional books, but I imagine P1 Maths is straight-forward enough to not warrant additional reference.
HCL: Unless you need some guidance with 造句 & do not have external Chinese enrichment, otherwise the Optional Handbooks are not useful. (videlicet, sentences in the Handbooks may not be acceptable if 句子没有带出词语的意思。)
SCI: Not required. Lower Block Science is not a problem; it is the Upper Block Science which tends to be mind-boggling.
Stationery: I doubt one needs the Pockets File (mine was never used), the Optional covers... Three-Lined Exercise book is meant for P1/P2, you probably don't need to stock up a lot of them. I tend to buy a stack of Single Line (often used till P4) & Medium Square exercise books.
The school bookshop sells some assessment books too, for a limited period due to lack of storage space. You can check with the proprietress then. For myself, the school bookshop is both reliable & price-competitive; so I'd always opt for the pre-pack service.

                        Hi Leocub,

Where did you get the p1 booklist? Did it comes together with the p1 orientation letter?
