For all parents and future students of NYGH, here are a few pointers for you to consider before joining our big Nanyang family.

1. Inter-Disciplinary-Unit (IDU) in sec 1
IDU aims to show the students how the different subjects are related.
it happens over a course of 7-8 weeks and involves a lot of project work. Your group will have to be bonded and everyone has to be able to work well and contribute to the project.
the projects done throughout this module will count for majority of your CA2 marks, so please do not take any part of this module lightly.
this made me become very lazy which made my grades suffer when it came to the end-of-year examination.

2. Textbooks and workbooks in general
throughout the course of the year, the teachers hardly used the textbooks. Most of the materials needed for studying would come in notes that the teacher would provide.

3. iPads (only necessary in secondary2)
the school would send out the price list and list of distributors for the ipads at the end of sec1.

4. CCAs
in general, those in team sports tend to be more bonded and are closer to one another.
Choosing a CCA that you enjoy is very important as you will most likely stay in that CCA for the next 4 years.
Sports CCas will require you to participate in trials and selections before they either accept you, reject you or you will beput on the waiting list.
Some CCAs will have trials that everyone has to participate in, be it whether you signed up for it or not. some examples would be softball, track and field and shooting. For these kinds of trials, if they really like you, they would ask you to either go for another trial or offer you an easy way to enter with a yellow form.
yellow form - all you need to do is put that CCA as your first choice and you would get accepted.
Getting rejected by the CCA you were really looking forward to joining does not mean you are bad at it, i just means that others might have more talent or practiced harder than you for it, so just try harder for your next trial.
i suggest doing something new for a change. if you were from a sports CCA, chances are that you would still want to be in one, so try a different sport. if you were in a performing arts or clubs CCA, try out for a sports CCA. you never know what secret talent you might have.

5. Teachers
most of the teachers are very warm and i strongly recommend that you arrange for remedial sessions with your teacher if you do not understand and need to clarify some things.
Nanyang is just like any other school. It has some fantastic teachers and some that are not so good.

6. Canteen
the selection of food is very limited and many stalls have closed down as many of the students tend to patronize the stall they enjoy eating from most and many stalls do not have many customers.

7. Campus
the campus is very old however the construction of the new building makes the school seem newer and would probably appeal to the younger generation.

8. Traffic in the Morning
it is advisable that you take the public transport as the school is very congested despite the new school start time which is around 45mins later than other schools.

9. O-Level Track
if you do very badly in sec 2 or 3, you will be asked to take another examination that will determine whether you will be asked to drop to take O-Levels in sec4 or not.
Constant work is very important when it comes to your final grade at the end of the year, so do put in a lot of effort when it comes to studying for quizzes.

10. Sec 1 and 2 - angel & mortal system
a sec 2 from your sister class would be your angel.
she is supposedly required to give you gifts as well as tips on getting through your school life.

11. Sec 1 Orientation
first impressions are very important, so just be the best version of yourself throughout the week.
you might or might not become super close to the person sitting next to you on the first day of school but treat it with an open mind and do not *i repeat do not* stick with friends from primary school. the chances if they are from a different class, they will probably find new friends and would not want you to be sticking with them wherever they go.

FINAL TIPS
your group of friends will probably depend on what CCA you choose to join.

i hope you will enjoy your experience in Nanyang and that these tips really helped you make your decision on whether or not to join Nanyang and/or made your understanding of Nanyang deeper.

I wonder if the existing students who dsa (sports) are coping well given the amount of training (more intensive nearer to competitions) committed ? Will the teachers provide make up lessons for them?

those that dsa sports and those that just entered that CCA just that year will have the same training schedule. Depending on how hiong the trainings are on a regular basis, the trainings nearer to competitions are usually the same

Just to add that many teachers are really approachable and don't be afraid to seek them for clarification even after lessons. My dd always look for teachers when she needs to clear doubts, this is the best way!

Does NYGH offer any third language like Jap, French, German or Spanish in-house without the need to travel to Bishan or Newton? If need to travel, does school provide transport?

Those that you mentioned are taken at MOELC.
One way transport is provided.

NYPS girl PSLE score 248 + 2, get into NYGH? Anyone can confirm? (COP NYPS girl is 250)

Check with the principal that must put it as first choice. Is it true that all NYPS girl 250 and above will get in, and the remaining will be non-NYPS girl?

Hi, Malay is more of a IN-house Programme in NYGH. It’s called the Malay Special Programme (MSP) and students don’t need to travel to MOELC for lessons because they’re conducted in the school.
