My kid’s score is 252. What school should I consider? Prefer girls’ school and I live near Kovan.
Her score is not that high and will have problem getting into St Nicholas. -

Then, 261 + 2 = 263 :
Low chance, as your daughter T-score do not meet 265, and MOE latest policy does not permit appeal, if do not meet COP.
Unless this year NYGH COP Drop to 263, and your daughter's 263 has very high decimal points, possible. But if her decimal points is low ...

Anyone have statistics of the %tage of NYPS girls, who scored 250 & above, for last year (2015), vs this year 2016 ?
If this year (2016) more NYPS girls scored 250 & above, compared to last year (2015), means more NYPS girls qualify to go back to affiliated NYGH, leading to lesser vacancies left available for non-affiliates to enter, then possible for NYGH COP to move up.
But if the reverse is true, then COP may drop.
RGS :
Your +2 not applicable, as RGS is not a SAP school.
Her chance of entering RGS is still there, if COP this year remain at 261. But if happen to shoot up to 262, cannot.
Anyway, just put down these 2 hot schools, inside your list of 6 choices.
When the MOE computer posting algorithm process, is not based on \"whoever first apply into the school, first served\" policy. Not like that.
It process according to \"whoever has a higher T-score first : then will process this candiate's Requirement first, see which school choices this pupil had requested for\".
Computer first sort the thousands of psle candidates by T-score first, before start to process, one by one :
starting from the Top scholar across the island, from this batch, until the bottom last psle candidate in the cohort, whoever he / she is.
Am sorry but am confused here. Probably it may be also be because am a rookie to the system.If that's the case then for sure everyone should end up with their school of choice as long as their marks are within the COP and they have listed the school as one of the six choices isn't ? A Friend shared his son's experience last year wherein which his Son ended up with his 6th school of choice though his Tscore was equal to the 3rd choice! :? Fortunately their appeal was accepted and he got into his 3rd choice. -
We are in a dilemma. DD is very sure she wants to get into her dream school… which I am guessing it will take her about an hour to reach, while hubby is rather against her choice and is insistent on getting her to choose his choice school instead.

Distance does make a huge difference. It is so very tempting to send to the best school the score can get you and I see so many doing this but if there is a good school near by that DC can get into it's a significant advantage.
DS is impressed by a sch 50mins away from our hse by MRT (DTL then CC line)....I'm a not sure, but he seems so passionate, should I dissuade him? We visited the school and it was like \"love-at-first-sight\" for DS, I like the sch myself, but it is the distance that I'm not sure....but now DS seems determined to put that sch as first choice.
We visited other schools near our house, but this farther school is still his # 1 fav.....the other nearer schs all need at least 30mins of bus commute as well....so no sch within walking distance.
Anyone with experience to share?
Yesterday DS2 and I had a long conversation about schools. His teachers were really urging him to go to a top school which is about 1 hour by bus. I could see he was pressurised becos this was not the school he had chosen for himself. The school he had chosen and was passionate about was 10-15 min walk away from home but less prestigious for sure. So we sat down and had a discussion during which we spoke about various aspects like CCA choices, distance from home, sleep, pressure, small fish in big pond vs big fish in small pond and so on. In the end he stuck with his original choice, and even put the school near by as 2nd choice too as it was a dual track school.
There are ways of managing long distances which I have seen others do. For example, a friend's son takes a taxi daily - he lives in the west while his school is in the east. A lighter CCA choice would help to reduce time spent in school and therefore help in time management. I know some kids sleep in trains and buses but I really feel sad when this happens.
I feel the important thing for your DS now is to have a conversation with you which really takes into account his hopes and desires as well as what is important to your family. -
I have the same dilemma with DD. Now she likes SNGS very much after the open day today. But it takes about 1h to commute from home to school. Will she able to have enough rest? She always need long hours’ sleep. Any parents whose DC in a secondary school far away from home know their DC coping well?

Your understaing of the posting system is correct. Under the current system, all the students are ranked according to their t-score which is a number with many decimal places. Thus, students with the same t-score on the result slips are highly likely to have different t-scores in the computer system. Hence, students further down the ranking list will be turned away once the vacancy of a school is filled. Do bear in mind that previuos COP only serves as a guide, please make your choices carefully especially the last choice. I had read of a case where a student was posted to a school out of his 6 choices. -

Regarding distance from school, I agree with SpartanMum about discussing with DC.
The most important factor is the child has to be the one who like the school. Then DC will be motivated to do well there, & go the extra mile (literary)
For my DS, his priority is a school within walking distance. Hence it's either RI or CHS in Bishan.
On the other hand, DS has 2 friends who did very well (270+/- type of t-score) stay in Bishan too, & could have entered RI, but 1 chose HCI, 1 chose ACSI as they feel the culture suit them better. Both are motivated to do well & don't mind the long travel.
On the other hand, I know of kids who are forced to go to schools that are far fr home, just becoz parents force them. And that long journey & that waking up early become a drag. They don't do very well in schools either becoz they don't fit in the culture or too tired to study. And now almost 1 year already, they are still blaming or arguing with parents about the \"wrong\" choices, or about \"hating\" the schools. -

son's school is about 20 min bus ride...it is not far, just that there are many traffic lights which takes up time.
his cop didn't give him many choices...but he's already completed secondary school.
in secondary school, hours are longer and there are supplementary lessons and CCA takes up another day. at lower secondary, it's still bearable...but at upper sec, supplementary lessons can take place 4 days a week until 5+...it can be tiring to travel long distance to get home and there is homework/projects to complete. -

Her aggregate is 258+3. Just want to make sure that it's safe to put SCGS and RVH as 5th and 6th choice? The last year's COP is 253 for both and RVH is a SAP school.
