      Hi

Just want to ask about Situational Writing. What are the types that will typically come out for PSLE? Email, reports, letters? Additionally, are there any techniques for teaching vocab? Because there are 10 questions in all (5 for MCQs and the other 5 for short passage).
Emails and letters are by far the most common types. Historically, reports, postcards and notices are rare.

There are several techniques for teaching vocabulary. Interesting that you should post this enquiry. Only today I held a workshop regarding vocabulary questions in the PSLE at my residence for a group of students.

Vocabulary is something that has to be built up over a relatively lengthy period of time. Given sufficient time, I prefer to incorporate expanding vocabulary as part of my oral interaction with students. For example, I will ask students to discuss their compositions or comprehension passages and during the course of them doing so I will deliberately push them with more advanced vocabulary; I will repeat the expanded vocabulary in future discussions for revision purposes and expect to see the vocabulary increasingly reflected in their interaction with me and in their writing. When marking compositions, I make it a point to always suggest more powerful and interesting vocabulary, though I am careful to avoid purple prose.

But I presume you want a quick-fix for the PSLE, which is just around the corner? In that case, go through a couple of past papers and look up synonyms and antonyms for the suggested answers using Google. If you enter in Google for instance ‘tranquillity meaning’ then you will get a wonderful list of synonyms of ‘tranquillity’ as well as example sentences of usage.

Hi, appreciate it if anyone could help me with the following synthesis question using "Apart from".

Q: The talented boy plays the piano well and is a good soccer player.\t\t\t\t\t

May I know which of the following answers given is correct?
              (1) Apart from playing the piano well, the talented boy is a good soccer player.
              (2) Apart from playing the piano well, the talented boy is a good soccer player too.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
              (3) Apart from playing the piano well, the talented boy is also a good soccer player.

              My personal view is (1).

              Thank you.

Hi there. Can any advise where to go to for a good compo-writing class. My son is P6 this year, and truly needs to brush up on his writing. And hopefully the tutor/ center can advise the various strategies to tackle the compos based on current syllabus/ exam format. Thanks!

That's what I do. PM me if you're keen.

BTW, in what area does your son need to 'brush up on his writing'? I might be able to share a few strategies with you here.

No. For emails, no need to write date.
