Kaplan or unisim
-
Umm I think its best to do something that you really enjoy and not study for the sake of the money only. Interest is extremely important.
But if you really need to choose when all other things are equal, choose UniSIM. That would be my choice, more recognized I believe. -
I would suggest Unisim not because it is more recognised but Kaplan degree programme are really tough especially if you are working full-time & you are expected to have solid foundation else when the going gets tough, it can be demoralizing if you can’t do the assignment, clear the exam or see your class shrinking.
& as kevkevkaf mentioned, do it for interest. No interest hard to sustain. -
Thanks for your advice. Indeed I have no interest in studying. Sigh!
-
Unisim of course…more recognise locally.
-
unisim. quality of students there better. kaplan many rich foreign kids.
-
I thought Unisim is just like local uni such as nus,ntu and smu? The author meant SIM?
-
just to share, i will be signing up with UNISIM. Though dont have much confident in passing, but guess would be good to have a paper qualification in the near future.
-
Dear Beariecrystal3
UNISIM of course. It is going to be a fully recognized university and its degree is going to be comparable to any other local universities in the years ahead. There is absolutely nothing wrong in your thinking of getting a degree so that you can progress further in your career, hence command a better earning power. As a matter of fact, glad to see that you have such motivation. It is important, though, that you need to choose the right course so that after your graduation, there is high demand in the industry for such graduates. Don’t take a course just for the sake of getting a degree. Some degrees may not offer you much opportunities and options in the local market. Do some research first in terms of market demand before you decide on the course you want to pursue. -

Don't feel too discouraged before you start on the prog. One must be really lazy or produce sloppy work or never study for a person to fail a course.
Unisim courses are developed with adult learners working full time. Important to have a positive mindset. As with all forms of learning - be it at primary school to secondary to JC/poly education, as long as one studies diligently, does all the required readings and assignments, check with the lecturers for areas/topics you are unfamiliar with, you should be alright.
Enjoy the learning journey. -

Read this in some educational forum and couldn’t agree more as parents wasting money in Kaplan.
Note Kaplan is base in central Dhoby Ghaut area. Their fee they charge is relatively high considering the class size could be close to 80. But sad and very disappointing to say that the teaching facilities supported by them is way below par in standards compared to other institution like eg SIM, PSB to support such a large number. In SIM and PSB they use high definition projector for their lecture tutorials. Class size wise in SIM class size might be close to 80 but the tutorials classroom is a high end cinema movie type with elevated seat and rows on each rows with large and HIGH END sharp definition projection screen to support larger classrooms.
But in Kaplan no one in there seems to care about the low resolution cheapskate screen projection which they have. The projection use by Kaplan is very crappy, blurry, low in resolution, not zoom to sharpness compared to SIM and even PSB. Even for students sitting on the front rows is really pain in eye to view and read the projection screen. Yup you are right, Kaplan uses crappy projector just really for display show and not lecturer teaching purposes. So every degree lecture session is like blak blak by the us lecturers teaching and students are all squeaking and staining theirs eyes on the small and useless burry projector on for both small and even worse large tutorial rooms. Really feel sorry for the students. Cause students cant really see what us the lecturers are teaching, Compared to other institution Kaplan have the worst teaching and learning experience.
More over their whiteboard are small and useless that some lecturers don’t bother switching the lights on while writing on the whiteboard. If someone is to pay more than $20,000++ thousands of dollar is really unacceptable and for degree student is really good luck that every time they have to strain and guess what the lecturer are teaching in class! Sum up the projector use by Kaplan is worse than the primary school projection which they use but with twice the classroom size.
In sum I do not know what Kaplan thinks but it is really unfair for student who pay such a high professional school fees but not receive even basic teaching facilities. Is a real shame for their modern time now. Kaplan overcrowd their class size in small but ‘long’ classroom with low focus and resolution screen projector, whereby most student are really handicap with what actually the lecturer are teaching and writing on board.
My advice is that Kaplan should really hire external professional help for their student per ration projection screen, change their whole useless and crappy projector if needed or even cut down the class size if they can’t support it like SIM with not classroom but high end classy theatre type like tutorial rooms. But reckon their so lucrative now they would bother less with it.
Students have feedback but not voice out that Kaplan do in certain extend uses useless and crappy projector and their always like enrolled and stuck in the situation.
Given the choice Avoid Kaplan at all cost, go for SIM or even PSB. Even for PSB round the same Schools fees the class for certain course are less than 20 students and larger class size would be round 40-60 or even less. But however for both PSB & SIM the projector and visualizer is much more crystal clear and not straining and pleasing to the eyes.
Also, if you don’t mind spending more money than the school fee itself for eye surgery which I might did for my child, then please go ahead to Kaplan and let students to view their useless and crappy projector!!
Unknown to some students, It really cause long term damage to people eyes with the kind off focus low resolution projector they use! And shame on it that class size could be squeeze to 80 but projector use is more like for show display set. -
[quote=“beariecrystal3”]I am planning to further my studies by doing a part time degree, which degree is better?
Kaplan cost abt $20k in 18mths
Unisim cost abt $13-$15k and take longer times to complete.

Study something you truly love man.
I have friends who are in Kaplan and said they are out to make money. Facilities are not that good while the lecturer are mostly part timers.
If i were to choose between them, I would go for Unisim or even SIM. -
Totally agree with Pangyx,
SIM or even the PSB would be a much better choice. Even with one who study one truly love, the passion while studying in Kaplan will dwindled. Is not only that Kaplan is out to make money, is just that for degree students studying there is a total nonsense for them and not conducive at all.
I don’t know whether their management should try sitting in their pathetic little classroom filled with oversize crowd student of 80 and see whether half the class could literally see what the lecturers are teaching. Most of them could only hear what the lecturers are making out what the in depth complex theories their teaching. Thus, student are wasting time and money in Kaplan.
Thus, most student are struggling on what the lecturer are showing but can only hear what is taught. And their poor lectures don’t even have mic to support them teaching compare to other institution which is so laughable.
For us parents, One could just view from the outside the classroom and is ridiculous that the projector is very low in resolution, burry, off focus when the front size words are on normal viewing unless really zoom big.
Moreover, their pathetic class designs for large class are appalling which come in different shape design and sizes which make it very ‘conducive’ for studies.
This is so because compare to other institution they don’t have a real dedicated campus at all and besides having classroom they wont have any multi purpose sport hall or something if we could get the whole idea.
On whole Kaplan just look nice from the outside with great sales people to bring in the student enrolment but the basic teaching facilities like projectors are provided just for show and not genuine teaching purpose. Who knows how long they have been providing such pathetic basic facilities.
Given the choice I will never let my children go to Kaplan which is really beyond pathetic. And base in good faith will never recommend anyone to go for degree courses in Kaplan. Your learning experience is only audio and not visual to what is taught. How is one able to cope in degree standard when many visual written notes are required.
Anybody have any idea on why Kaplan from previous have such high enrolment? -
I understand from my neighbor that Unisim and SIM is not the same Uni.Unisim is similar to NTU,NUS and SMU so it is better than private.Anyone can feedback?

They are not similar. But they are better than private. In my opinion, you should rank the universities in Singapore as such:
1. NUS/NTU/SMU/Yale-NUS/SUTD
2. UniSIM/SIT
3. SIMGE/PSB
4. everything else
UniSIM and SIT are govt-backed. Means fees are cheaper and degrees are valued by the govt. They also have a higher quality standard to meet, unlike private universities. However, they are very newly recognised. And, they have little to non-existent research faculty. They are almost unheard of outside Singapore and the degrees will carry very little weight. SUTD and Yale-NUS might also be new. But they have a very strong research faculty and are tied to even bigger names. Yale for Yale-NUS and MIT for SUTD. So they should be seen as on par with the big 3. Understand that SIT also partners with overseas university, but none of them comes close to Yale or MIT, or even NUS. -

I know of two people who were once Kaplan’s students. Both chosen Kaplan due to it offered certain courses/course structure/schedule/etc that suit them when compared to others.
One younger girl about 21 years old then took psychology. Studied two years part time in Kaplan while working full time. She got good results and was able to take her Honour year in an Australian university (recognised one) with her savings from work.
The other more matured one took her part time PhD. Completed her social research work and thesis and got her title 5 years after course.
Both are doing well in their work now.
So at times I think the students’ internal motivation matters most. If they are not motivated, no matter how clear/good the projected images/teaching facilities/lecturers/etc are also useless.
These institutions basically are more ideal for more matured students and not the young green birds who still don’t know what they want.
