?? brainstorm for topic, get your kid to write in english if english is his/her preferred language, and translate to Chinese. and then memorise and regurgitate. that's what i'll do for my potatoboy. but if higher standard, will need others to help advise then.

Does it help students to better master show n tell for schools to stream their P1 students for Higher Chinese at P2 as reported by the story below?

Did the parent question st Hilda primary Chinese Hod -

how many marks then can qualify a P1 student to take Higher Chinese in P2, if 97 isn’t good enough ?

Must have perfect score, 100, then can qualify ?

Or is the school also looking at other subjects Eng & Maths performance too taking into consideration, to decide whether or not a child can start taking Higher Chinese from P2 ?

Or is there a quota intake, for taking P2 Higher Chinese (HCL)?

In some schools, there is a quota for taking in students for Higher ability (HA) Maths or HA Science or HA Chinese enrichment, in school. So once exceed quota, they won’t take in anymore.

E.g.
Suppose say, quota is 20

How many p1 classes are there in St hilda?

St Hilda primary being a GEP school : many parents inside can be "gan jeong", busy guiding & supervising, preparing their children well, for exam.

Suppose say, across the entire P1 cohort, a lot of students did very well in P1 : scoring 100 or 99 or 98, once exceed the quota, then come to 98 or 97 can’t enter, unless the school can increase quota, for high ability subject class.

In the end, who can enter HCL ?
Only those scored 100 or 99, managed to enter

Perhaps clarify with the school, first what’s the selection criteria, for P2 HCL ? Did the school set any quota ? If yes, what’s the quota ?

Parents can discuss with Chinese hod

But usually in schools, if child score 85 & above (ie. Band 1) for Chinese, can do Higher Chinese already

Last year's briefing P said top 25% of cohort so that means child's 2 other subjects must be good too. So what if her overall CL is 97 marks but her EL and MA combined marks weren't as good?

FYI many SAP pp taking HCL in P1 and 2 scored above 97 marks hor!

Ultimately why does that parent insist on HCL? Under the new AL system, is it so important?? It's only useful if you want to go to a SAP sec school and instead of 3 points deduction, you now get in front of the queue but note, ONLY if you put a SAP sec sch as your first choice (i leave u to visit MOE microsite to refresh your memory).

I think P is being prudent as under the new scoring system, your 4 main subjects' raw scores are far more impt. Ensuring all 4 are equally good should be the student's priority. Why tax your poor kid with a 5th paper, HCL? Go drill on the other 4 instead until child can score above 90 marks for EVERY subject as the \"截长补短\" principle no longer applies for the 2021 cohort.

In any case, one should hv known that this school isn't a SAP pri sch when one registered for it 2 years ago. HCL has never been made compulsory in non SAP schools in lower primary, so pls stop whining and claim it's your darn entitlement to pursue the subject. Transfer to NYPS next year if you are so hard up on \"Higher HCL\". :slapshead:
