Hi all, just a curious question from the top of my head. Does anyone know if secondary 1 boys are assigned to classes randomly or by their results? I believe whether the boy is taking HMT might play a part too.

My boy enjoys his first day but he's not telling much as usual..
I believe they are not assigned by HMT as DS class has several boys who aren't taking HMT. They will join the boys from other classes during MT lessons.

Looks like boys are assigned to classes randomly. There's only 1 student taking AEP in my DS class.

May I ask parents how your DS will decide which CCA to put on the form? I'm really glad that the school make a big effort allowing & facilitating CCA trials for the boys these couple of days. :rahrah:

Last year, it was all MCQ based on patterns. Not sure if it will be the same this year.

Not sure about the details but the boys got half a day off yesterday to celebrate its excellent O level results.

Usually it's a full day off but MOE doesn't allow that these days.

Not sure on the full details. But from what my boy heard (including from friends in other top schools), VS O level results surpassed other boys’ schools and is close to the results of the other top girls’ schools like Cedar.

Was there on the day results were released. The school achieved 100% of students achieving at least 5 O level passes, and 100% of students can go JC/CI. In many subjects (English, Humanities, Sciences, Mathematics), the school’s distinction rate is way above national average for distinction. For Additional Mathematics, the distinction rate was 80+%.

My boy’s performance surprised himself too as he did not expect himself to do so well. He was very thankful to the school and teachers as he found it challenging all the way to the O level. From what I can see, the VS school leaders and teachers work very hard and do their best for the students under their charge.

The teachers have regular remediation/consultation with the students to help them master the skills and concepts from Lower Sec to Upper Sec. The Principal, Vice Principals, Year Head and Teachers also speak to the boys regularly to encourage them. For Sec 4 students, the Principal also writes a postcard for everyone of them and gives to the students before their last day of school. For students who are not doing well, there is close monitoring and support. Principal/Vice-Principals/Year Heads/HODs/Form Teachers will discuss with parents at PTM on support strategies and what the child will need to work on. Can be every term if the child is really not doing well. Who parents see depends on how bad the boy’s academic performance is.

In fact, I have friend whose son went into VS by DSA. He had to see the Principal, Year Head and Form Teachers with the son 3 times in Sec 4. The boy was also monitored regularly by Year Head under the Guidance Programme. In earlier years, he had to see the VP, Year Head and Form Teachers. Eventually, the boy did well and got the results better than what he was aiming for.

It was an achievement for the boy as his PSLE score was way below the school’s COP for the year and VS boys all do Additional Mathematics and Pure Sciences at Upper Sec which are not easy subjects (especially with the new exam syllabus, which requires thinking and application). Unlike other schools, VS boys don’t do combined Science or POA which would be easier to score. All students typically start Sec 3 with 8 subjects ie. 2 languages, 2 Mathematics, 2/3 Pure Science subjects, and 2 Humanities.
