Chinese diners spent $240,000 on reunion dinner@FengShui Inn
-
I would prefer to buy a 3 room flat as mentioned in the article to a feast which no matter how tasty will pass out from my body soon
-
But 42 sevings of wild empuraus though… I think I’d be full even if I ate just 1… (they were said to be a group of 20 so I’m assuming each ate about 2).
-
spend $240k to buy a 3-room hdb flat more worthwhile : can rent out whole house for re-curring rental income monthly, compared to spend so much in one single feast ; no matter how much yummy, delicious food to eat, at the end of the day, go through the digestive system, come out, gone
What's so special about this Fengshui restaurant, charged so ex for one Chinese New Year meal ? :?
The kitchen chef must be laughing his way, to the bank -
Life is short.
I won’t mind a once in a lifetime extravagant meal.
Another house means another piece of housework which I will gladly decline. -
I am actually very happy that the ultra rich is spending money in Singapore. Come and eat more at our restaurants and circulate the money through our economy! We should welcome such big spenders and the staff who leaked the receipt should be duly chided. Don’t think that others won’t know who you are.
-
If super rich, there is nothing wrong indulging. But for most of us, investing the money is more worthwhile.

Fengshui Inn serves VVIP customers and if I'm not wrong, it only offers degustation menus, depending on what's available during that season. Something like 私房菜 at an atas level.
Degustation or tasting menu means small portions served to each patron, but the meal will comprise several courses usually 9-10 thereabouts. Hence, you see 20 cod steaks, 42 \"Unforgettables\", meaning 1 patron ate 2 empuraus on average.
This bunch of guests could be high rollers and one or two might have just won a million bucks in the RWS casino. It's pretty common for winners to proceed to Fengshui Inn to celebrate after a good night at the roulette or in the VVIP poker rooms! However, based on hearsay, the bill usually comes out to be around SGD2k or so. So >SGD200k is crazy!
Looking at the receipt, I can tell they were fleeced (probably willingly lah!) by Fengshui Inn. Empuraus are cheap Malaysian (Borneo) fresh water fishes that fetched over MYR7000 recently. Some idiots decided that empuraus are tasty, but I'd rather go for giant grouper (Long Dan) anytime. Sultan fish is another overhyped Malaysian fish that I should caution everyone on.
The patrons ordered Australian lobsters. But well travelled gourmands will know those aren't the best in the culinary world. Anyway, when the high rollers or multi-millionaires are in a victorious mood, anything that's recommended by the manager or chef is good.
Now coming to the 50-year-old vintage Guizhou Maotai which cost them SGD72k or SGD36k / bottle. That's cos they drank it in an F&B outlet. If you bought it from the alcohol stores in China, it shouldn't cost that much as there's no corkage/in-dining surcharges.
I had 2 bottles of top-grade 30-yo Maotai that I got from China some 12 years ago. That makes my Maotai 42 years old. 1 bottle had already been consumed at a birthday banquet, another still collecting dust at home. We estimated the value of our vintage Maotai to be only CNY80k. So clearly, the patrons had been creamed by that restaurant. But then again, they were too happy to splurge or too drunk to protest!
Chateau Lafite Rothschild should not cost SGD8k / bottle if you'd bought it from reliable wine distributors. I dunno what year theirs were, but that's also another crazy price tag to me.
I think they also ordered 3 bottles of Ausone which cost them SGD5k / bottle. I don't think Ausones are that pricey if you know who to buy from.
There was a curious item @ SGD3. They ordered/consumed 100 nos. I wonder what those could be? Wet towels? Pickles or peanuts? Chinese tea or plain water?
Thing about dining with filthy wealthy nouveau riche from PRC is you don't have to worry about the bill. Savvy ones will definitely order the finest ingredients/dishes, but it appears from the limited info revealed on the receipt that those at RWS were a bunch of diners who did not know \"how to eat\" (good stuffs). We're curious how exotic those mysterious \"specials\" were
If you dine with rich associates or partners in China, you really get the BEST quality food and drinks (vintage tea included) from your hosts. Because \"Face\" is very important to the Chinese! -
and ordering the best and expensive dishes is very important where FACE is concerned. the entire table has to be filled up. cannot finish up the food on the dishes even it is wasting because the chinese are particular that there is remainder 有余.

these chinese diners must have thought eating at fengshui inn would give them a change of luck.
-
read fm the asiaone on whether it was a ‘fake’…
-
A video of the $240k meal surfaced on the web. The video is fake. Anyone who has been to FengShuiTing at RWS can tell, just from the interiors of the restaurant.
The receipt seems authentic. The kind of numbers on that receipt seem consistent with FengShuiTing’s menu. -

Actually... MrsKiasu, if you're an RWS member, you should've eaten at FS Inn before, no? It's open to the general public for normal meals and dimsum. Won't be that expensive if you'd ordered from their regular ala carte menu. Might be $200 for a normal Chinese dinner for a family of 4?
I believe this bunch of diners were in the VVIP room and had requested for the HK celebrity chef's recommendations.
I just noticed \"00\" so that could mean Year 2000 for the Chateau Ausone and Chateau Lafite Rothschild. So yes, those Year 2000 vintage Lafites can cost over SGD1k / bot. The Chinese are particularly obsessed with Lafite because of a Lafite auction in HK many years ago, and partly because some mainland movies portrayed their cool idols drinking that. They call it 拉菲特 as they don't know how to pronounce Chateau or Bordeaux correctly. Drinking Lafite shows you're one class above the peasants and proletarians.
Another drink the Chinese bourgeoisie love is Louis XIII 路易13 cognac. I had a bottle at home as well, but contributed to someone's Christmas party some years ago.
However, am surprised those 20 diners at FS Inn didn't order the expensive Louis XIII. They drank instead the award-winning national liquor 贵州茅台 that's commonly served to dignitaries at PRC state dinners/banquets (国宴). President Richard Nixon was served this during his visit to Beijing in 1972. It was Premier Zhou Enlai's fav tipple. The commies drank it a lot during the Long March. It's 58 degrees!
If you don't mind drinking new baijiu, it's only selling at SGD200+ at Yue Hwa Emporium. -
i havent been there js..yeah maybe give it a try one of these days.
I just read that pc of article on whether it was 'fake' inside the car when I was driving..when stopping at traffic light la
and now confirmed SGD240k, real news? wow!!
