Applying to Universities

If you're not an SAFOS recipient or selected PSC scholar or Med student, you will go to unis only after ORD, even though the uni has offered you a place in 2017. That uni has to agree to hold the place for you till you ORD. Some won't.Jennifer:
Would a overseas uni offer 2017?
An overseas uni can offer 2016, 2017 or 2018. Ultimately when the guy enters uni is dependent on when the guy ORD. If the 2015 cohort guy is exempted from NS, clearly he can join uni as early as 2016. Else, after 2 yrs of NS, the earliest ORD may be Dec 2017 (some may ORD as late as June 2018). UK or US typically starts in Sep or Oct. Hence the 2 years gap.
Ask son to check with male seniors or teachers/scholarship counsellors from JC who are more familiar with the cycles. Mind the overseas uni application deadlines/interview/personal statement/testimonials, student visa, accommodation & SAT dates. You need to buffer ~18 mths to get all these done. -
Pls pardon my ignorance but for boys applying for either local or overseas uni - is it ok to do so during their NS stint or best to secure a place first immediately after A level results are out?
I have heard of students taking Gap Year. Generally is it only 1 year n must apply to Uni during the Gap Year for the following yearโs intake?
Thanks. -

For local unis, not much difference whether they apply immediately after A level results or during NS as the local unis will hold the place for him. However for courses that require interviews and you can only apply for once, then best to strategise and see if the boy will perform better at the selection tests/interviews immediately after A level results or after a year in NS.Pls pardon my ignorance but for boys applying for either local or overseas uni - is it ok to do so during their NS stint or best to secure a place first immediately after A level results are out?

Singapore universities, and many overseas ones, are aware of the NS requirement for Singapore males, so many of them will be willing to hold the place until the boy has finished NS. Quite a few boys will apply at the same time as the girls to secure a place, but some will wait if they can't make up their minds, and some will change their minds and apply to other universities during their NS years. I know 1 boy in my church who got a place in a UK university, then changed his mind during his NS stint and applied to NUS.

Hi there I don't have enough KP to start a new thread since I'm new here so I'm hijacking this thread. Basically my daughter received her A level results yesterday and it wasn't too ideal.
My question is, how important is personal statements to applying for universities overseas, and also locally? She is looking at getting into some overseas schools (still undecided but open to it) and NUS business school but I think her grades have just fallen short of the required rank points for NUS biz.
Any parents or undergrad here who has any experience with it that can share their perspective?
Thank you and much appreciated

Hi, newbie here!
1. May I kn how long will the overseas uni hold a place for our NS boys?
2. For those courses that req interviews (Law/Med/Dentistry), how many interviewers will there be usually?
3. Do we apply for scholarships at the same time as local/overseas uni applications or do we wait till we get the offers?
Thank you -

I can only answer for UK unis. Most of them won't hold the place. So for our NS boys, they usually have to apply the year before they are due to enter. Top UK unis really favor singapore A level students. It is not difficult to get offers from them if you do a good personal statement and have good grades. But I would really advise your child to write the personal statement yourself than to get someone else to write. Really, there is no glory getting into a course based on something not done by yourself.Hi, newbie here!

You can start applying for scholarships already. Actually NS boys have an advantage of another 1 or 2 extra years to apply. They can also get testimonial from their army.
