      Hi all

I browse thru the work done by ds in his school work. I realized that his Science teacher always mark wrongly. For incorrect answers, she still mark correct. It happened in many worksheets. In addition, there were many spelling mistakes in his work, eg carbon dioxide, oxygen, (I mean these are completely new words to ds, so he may have copied wrongly), but the Science teacher did not correct them in the workbook, she just ticked correct.

Obviously she is not looking thru carefully in the worksheets. Ds told me she will just go to each table and start flipping the pages and tick the answers during lesson time.

I checked the profile of this Science Teacher, she is not new. She was a HOD in another school!
      What should I do?

p/s Ds is in P3. Just started Science as a new subject.
If you are really concerned, you might wish to contact the teacher privately, and go through some of the answers that you have doubts about. Get the teacher's point of view first, before you resort to anything else. If it is not satisfactory, and the same issues persist, you may get feedback from the other parents of kids in the same class and decide on what you want to do from there.

        Xueyan,

Blind marking is a no-no. I second Chief’s suggestion - speak to her first and decide from there. Who knows, unexpected things may happen.

I am not too sure but I believe spelling science vocabulary correctly is a must. In tofu boy’s school, they even have science spelling (on top of English spelling). This, plus a chat with some parents, made me think so. Hence, I am of a view that the teacher should correct the spelling mistakes.

I was told by dd's sci er (P3) that spelling errors are acceptable so long as it doesnt give diff meaning. Guess probably 1st yr for Sci, so given more chance 🤷

For my DS's school, key words and Scientific terms need to be spelt correctly.

does your DS school's Science Teacher give his class a list of key words, for the various Science topics ?

No though I think it will be useful. My guess is that schools (MOE?) do not want students to \"memorise\" the key words. I have not seen last year PSLE but many students (DS and his friends) felt that some (or many?) Section B questions were \"new\" and quite a few application-related too. They felt it's quite different from PSLE 2013 to 2015 (the booklet they bought in school). The 2016 PSLE papers are available in Popular so I think later this year, there would be more discussion since teachers would usually go through the paper in class and compared the questions with previous years'.

You probably can WA her privately and ask for \"clarification\" as you'll be revising for SA1 during the coming Mar holidays. Or call her so that there'll be no black and white conversations recorded in either HPs. Some teachers are worried about what they type in WA and email. They don't want parents to post any screengrabs to external parties (social media) or to their bosses (HOD/P) that may expose their incompetence or carelessness.

However, if you know the correct answers and do not need her verification, you can just close 1 eye. Make sure your son remembers the correct answers and spellings. If it's a weighted test, then you need to fight for the marks.

Many lower pri teachers double or triple hat. Some of them could have been overstretched! They may be Math grads from NUS, but they're employed to teach Science and/or English.
