How will this new policy affect the independent IP schools? Cannot get clear message from the news article.

        troubled:

Will it affect kids taking PSLE in 2017 and applying for DSA?

        hi troubled,

        i just called MOE.
They said the pioneering batch hit or take effect immediately, is from this year PSLE 2017 (born Y2005), not next year.
i asked : why so short notice ?

The girl who answered the phone, din reply. But said it take effect : this year

(u may want to contact MOE yourself, to clarify)

        MOE should unequivocally state: \"effective 2017\", not \"by 2018\".

Go ask the P during the upcoming OHs.

MOE should update their website with their latest announcements.

            Straits Times says:

'Schools to refine DSA selection from 2017 to focus on identifying students with specific talents, and move away from recognizing strong general academic abilities..'

In the past, independent IP schools could admit students who had shown consistently strong overall academic results in Primary 4, 5 and 6 via DSA (e.g. top 3 in standard). From this year, this is no longer possible.

            Example
Student A is consistently top 3 in standard in P4, 5 & 6 in terms of academic results. Student B is National Math Olympiad Platinum Award recipient and has other related achievements in the Maths domain. However, he is not strong in his other 3 subjects. Only Student B will be considered for admission via DSA.

Will the new policy apply to specialized schools that take in 100% DSA students? E.g., schools like SOTA and Singapore Sports School. Currently, SOTA uses GAT to filter out students. So many students with strong artistic talents failed to get in because they did not do well for the GAT.

SOTA doesn't use the GAT. They have their own version of a cognitive test, which is not the GAT that the other schools use. I think there's some math and logic puzzles involved, and there's also a separate essay component which the GAT doesn't have.

The essay component has been there since day 1. But math and logic puzzles don't seems to gel with looking for artistic talents.

if student A is consistently within Top 3 in standard in P4, 5 & 6, in terms of academic results -
this student shouldn't have problem entering Secondary school, via PSLE T-score. Need not DSA

Hmm... honestly who will be checking how each school is selecting their students during dsa process?

The top in cohort students can still apply under any one of the subjects domain and still get accepted wah. Being good in their overall result would not disqualify them from applying under subject domain. If they are top in cohort they would most probably have many awards and certificates as well

If the schools can pick overall good result + strong in one particular area, theoretically they would be more than happy to pick those students over those with mediocre overall result although strong in one particular area

Moe can set all the guidelines but ultimately dsa is a subjective process - selection criteria is set by individual school. Only t score is transparent lah

                        Agree with sleepy.

No GAT but school can select students based on interview and subject test. Still have to test.
