I was chatting with some P5 and P6 parents last week and realized some prefer to be 'IP-centric' (highest COP IP school as first choice) whereas some prefer to be 'school-centric' (refer to below illustration) in their 6 choices for secondary school.


1. St nicks IP
2. St nicks O level
3. SCGS IP
4. SCGS O level
5. Cedar IP
6. Cedar O level

Can I check, what's the pro or con of the school centric method, if any?

This is for non-affiliates right?

Why would anyone use this method?

If you can't get into SNGS IP, you're likely to get SNGS O level. If you cannot get into SNGS O level, you'll definitely get SCGS IP.
But hey, you pick after the results are out, so looking at the previous year's COP, you won't waste Choice #2-6 liddat, yah?

Last year (2016 PSLE) Cut-off point

SNGS (IP) : 257
SNGS (O, non-Affliated) : 253

SNGS (O, for Affliated P6 girls) : 230


SCGS (IP) : 252
SCGS (O, Non-Affliated) : also 252, same

SCGS (O, for Affliated P6 girls) : 220


Cedar (IP) : 254
Cedar (O) : 250

SCGS : is an un-usual, rare case, because it so happen that both her IP COP and O level COP coincided at the same value (252), for last year PSLE 2016 batch.

seldom do Secondary schools encounter this situation.

question -
If your daughter happen to score 252, meaning that she's eligible for both (IP as well as O level), would you choose IP or O, at SCGS ?

Yes, some interviewers will disrupt you if your response sounds too routine


Can try. Interview is nebber easy. ..even for adults

Interview is the most crucial : either make it or break it

I believe it still depends on which school coz at the end of the day, it's still all about your competition for a slot in that school.

Interviewers are probably not expecting some solid answers. If the student already passed school’s academic screening, then the interview session is just to hear the student speaks, how he or she carries oneself, ideally show confidence


Unless during the interview flag out some concerns eg. student is rude/snobbish or having lukewarm interest in school, otherwise usually quite good chance to get an offer

In the sch that my DD DSA for (ie DSA Acad domain), there is no selection test other than GAT so the interview is really to sieve out the students that they want, so interview is really impt, I heard success rate is only 50% out of the shortlisted candidates.

If your daughter happen to score 252, meaning that she's eligible for both (IP as well as O level), would you choose IP or O, at SCGS ?[/quote]some people may want to take a gamble for a 'better jc' so they opt for O level track. some people don't want another round of national exam stress, so they go for IP. some people don't like the EJC Sin Ming location, so they pick O level track, hoping to go somewhere else. some people's kids are not independent learners or don't like the joint IP curriculum, so stick to O level.

Some people are naturally eloquent and at ease during interviews, but some kids esp boys who are the math-y sort don't have a 'glib-tongue' like girls of the same age. Some home/paid rehearsals won't harm la. LOL!!!

But...doubt it's a prob for kids these days cos the new PSLE Oral format includes a simulated conversation component which should prepare them well enough to speak off the cuff, or in terms of minding their body lang/eye contact, outward appearance, greetings and so on.

If spell wrongly in Scientific terminology, in answer script -
will Tr penalise students, like minus away half a mark or 1 mark, for wrong spelling ?

I am not too sure about PSLE marking system and so I take the worse scenario which is minus 1 mark.

When my boy was in P4 and he made careless mistake in the spelling, the teacher deduct 1 mark.
