8 Junior Colleges are Merging? Rumors or Reality?
-
Yeah those private colleges with obscure angmoh names, until such time it’s good for state to sell them for a tidy profit.

I thought MOE planners are scholars :? why start JCs like Innova, Meridian when the better ones could go straight to IP schools after PSLE?Wonder what they will do with the existing plots of land (for those JC that are going to move).
8 JCs merging (effectively closing down 4 JCs) seems a bit drastic. -
The better psle scorers will prefer to head straight to IPJCs, instead of to those JCs that closing down very soon, for their last batch of A level students.
After close down, names of these JCs become history. Once upon a time, there was this JC called …
In the poly, they opened up attractive courses. One even called Creative writing. With more new attractive courses available at poly, more O level students prefer to go poly, end up : no need so many JCs, so close down some -

In the 1st place, better psle scorers won't consider those JCs that are closing down.
Better scorers currently doing O level in the 3 EJC feeder schools should seriously consider switching to IP track, if they qualify. -
Those O level students from the 3 feeder schools in EJC :
If don’t do well enough to enter RI/Hwa Chong for GCE A level, can still goto other JCs like Victoria, National, Eunoia, Temasek, Nanyang, ACJC, St Andrew JC, Anderson, Catholic JC, etc
they won’t merge religion-related mission JCs, because of different denomination, like :
St Andrew JC (Anglican), Catholic JC (Catholic denomination), Anglo-Chinese JC (Methodist)
(Anderson, Serangoon, Tampines, Meridien ) JC : since no religion, so MOE merge them
Chung Ching High is affliated to Nanyang JC, due to affliation, can’t merge -

Because if they don't retain a route to A levels for non-IP students, there will be a huge hue and cry? Anyway, not all students want to go the IP route for various reasons, but they may still decide to take A levels eventually. This route should not be closed.
And I believe that the no. of JCs was increased because of a short-lived baby boom. I guess the planners' mistake was that they were too optimistic. -
I guess in future, JCs will become even more elitist than before - since there will be fewer students taking A-levels.
The smarter students will have more doors open to them (more places in IPJCs) but the average students will find it much harder to receive the same opportunities and resources.
I wonder if this will result in more average students falling through the ever-widening education gap? -
The number of places in JCs isn’t actually decreasing, is it? Students who would previously have opted for one of the soon-to-be-closed JCs can now opt for the other JCs. The COP for those merged JCs will fall by virtue of this, as COPs are determined by the scores of the students entering it and not the other way around. So long as the number of places available to JCs are proportionate to the population, the chances of students being able to get into JC in future should be the same as before. Unless of course MOE has come out to say that the number of JC places has been cut back in proportion to the student population, then that’s a different story.
-
Without hard figures to look at, there is no clear picture. But considering the addition of IP and IB programmes over the years, and falling enrolment, it does make sense that there is overcapacity at the JCs if there isn’t a corresponding increase in student population.
-
I think the most affected will be the upcoming batches in the next 5 years.
The population decrease is gradual so for the next few years we have approximately the same number of students competing for 4 less JCs.
Is there any news on how the JC cutoff point will be affected? By "demand and supply" logic it seems the cutoff point will be lowered due to the reduction in supply of JCs.
