      Jennifer:

Interesting that MOE \"will ask\", instead of \"instructs\".
because MOE is dealing with RI which is one of the top JC. strangely, why would MOE be asking RI and not other JCs like st andrew's/CJC to increase the intake instead?

RI is an independent school so enjoys full autonomy.

But if minister \"asks\" and their principal says no, probably we will see a new principal.

            good one.

even if RI says yes, the students have to meet the COP first. not all students are cut out to enter RI or Hwa Chong. they won't lower standards just to take in more students.

              yes, strange

If RI were to increase intake beyond 1200 students per A level batch, maybe those with 5 points, can now enter RI. Then release the vacancies at SAJC, CJC, etc, so that those with above 15 points, can enter.

But if admit more students into RI, standard may drop ?

But if minister \"asks\" and their principal says no, probably we will see a new principal.[/quote]MOE will \"ask\" and RI will agree. As per my reply to jetsetter, the devil is always in the detail. An increase of one is still an increase.

Even if RI realistically increases the intake by 30 (or even 60) per cohort, their COP will only change marginally (+1) but most likely, it will not change at all. It's wishful thinking if parents are hoping for an easier access to some of these colleges because they have \"increased\" their intake.

Sadly, students who are scoring 15-20 points will be those most affected. No matter how you massage it, the remaining colleges will not be able to absorb the capacity lost by the 4 JCs. Effectively, the message will be for students with these scores to look elsewhere - poly or MI.

Just wondering aloud, if EJC were to take over one of those existing sites of the soon to be merged JCs, govt could have saved a tidy sum $XXmil. Furthermore, that current piece of land in Bishan probably had lots of constraints in construction.

MOE also did not share what they are going to do with the various sites that will be vacant soon. Take Kim Seng Secondary and old Gong Shan Primary, for example, closed down for 20 years, the sites (in prime district 09) are still waiting for redevelopment.

I could have missed it but did MOE share some figures on the dwindling intakes of the various JCs to make their case more convincing. How many students will be affected? Why choose to close down these specific 4 and not others? Why merge and shift to an older JC (like AJC and YJC) when the other merged JCs are newer? There are issues of accountability and communications to the public. Since the government’s last election victory in 2015, they have largely forgotten about all these.

after the election victory, the govt has forgotten just about everything.

Valid points but I doubt we will hear about them soon. Maybe wait till GE2020 😉

never name a Junior College after HDB area name, for 3 out of 4 JCs that go down in history, 3 are named after HDB areas :-

                        (Tampines, Jurong, Serangoon, Innova) JCs

                        Who remain ?
                        (Meridien, Pioneer, Anderson, Yishun) JCs
