Actually it is not uncommon that class sizes go above 40. I have heard of classes which are 44/45.

However, there is official statistics released by MOE on the average class size:

What has not been explained is how a JC can have less than full enrollment if that JC's COP is still lower than 20. And here, MOE is merging 8 JCs, 7 of which still have COP lower than 20. :scratchhead:

I don't think MOE really cares about the benefits of \"smaller class sizes\" or \"weaker students\" and all.

I believe the key phrase MOE used is \"critical mass\" - i.e. packing everyone in. They will continue with the 40 students per class.

On another note, I feel sorry for the CCA coaches, trainers, physiotherapists, etc who will lose their jobs.

Yah lor. teachers also. I guess good teachers can do tuition.

Independent schools aside, I always thought IP schools would not have more than 30 per class.

I think it depends.

Some classes could be even 33-35.

My nephew from ACSI said his school hired a lot of ang mo teachers. But they only work there for a few years or even few months.

No wonder 8 JCs affected but currently no plan for Poly to be merged.

Actually, the govt plan to have up to 40% of each cohort to be graduates. At the moment, it's around 30% even with the increases over the past couple of decades. In any case, if the range of jobs remains about the same (we will always need a mix of different types of jobs), even if 80% are graduates, it will just mean that many graduates will be doing what used to be non-graduate jobs. If students are going to get degrees just because they want to study a few more years out of interest, that's a good thing; but if all graduates expect to get what used to be \"graduate\" jobs (ie. top 20%), many will be disappointed.

It actually depends on the type of jobs available in the job market.

son just showed me this article. govt is going to restrict 30% of every cohort from JC to enter local university or 30% of the entire cohort for eg those born in year 2000? sorry very ignorant.

It will just simply encourage more mid tier students to go overseas for their further education.
