[PSLE MT] PSLE less weightage in Chinese / Mother Tongue

MMM, Grandma Chong was the grandma who wrote to the ST at the beginning of this lowering of MT weightage discussion, boasting about how good her grandkids are etc, if not for the fact that they were no good in Chinese, about missed opportunities etc. Believe there is a copy of her letter somewhere in this thread too.

There were so many parts in her letter that I felt like giving her a piece of my mind, she had better thank her lucky stars that it was a letter to the ST Online Forum and not posted here, otherwise, I am sure the replies would be fast and furious! :lol:
Just can't believe it. I've australian colleagues who learn CL here. I've a Japan colleague who request to be posted to CHina and he told me he is learning the language. I also have another UK colleague who is learning CL as he has a China girlfriend. We are so blessed as we are bilingual and CL being part of the cirriculm is compulsory for us. At least we can read and speak the language. Even those who struggled, I am sure they can understand. -

What’s wrong with these people who undermine the importance of CL??? Really fedup. Have they been living in the well?
While writing the previous comments, I just recalled what I revised with my P3 last night for her social studies exam today. "Economic defence". Isn’t learning CL a form of economic defence to begin with???
Was sharing with my P3 last night on the lower of MT and also within our family how her aunt hope that it will happen. She was like… how can they lower MT, China is so important, etc… This is coming from a P3 who understands this basic concept of China’s importance. Can’t a adult understand that??? Can’t believe it. THey still think it is elitist to be english speaking??? We’ve a street full of that, as a result, we are struggling with MT and losing our dialect today. -

自从教育部长黄永宏宣布教育部将检讨华文在小六会考的比重后，我便一直在思考这个课题。我感到左右为难，心里不断挣扎。我的两个女儿经历了目前的制度，二女儿去年才参加小六会考。我的儿子，则将在明年面对小六会考。所以，这个课题对我来说是非常切身的。
我在求学时，是以马来文为第二语文，一直到A水准。在家里，我们基本上是用英语沟通，我的孩子几乎完全不看华文电视节目或电影。他们看的是英文书，朋友之间也全用英语交谈。因此，他们在学习华文上有点困难，在小学时也都选择不修读高级华文。
我的二女儿目前在南洋女子中学就读，根据学校规定必须修读高级华文。她读得很辛苦，但有学校和补习课的帮助，还是能够及格。我们都同意尽一切努力，让她可以尝试克服任何障碍，最终取得突破和成功地掌握高级华文。
我们的努力获得了一些成果，让我感到相当自豪。然而，我同时也得注意这些努力不会对她的其他科目造成太大的影响。
在补习老师的帮助下，我另外两个孩子在华文的表现还令人满意。他们的成绩不是特优，但当我得知在新加坡女子学校中三的大女儿，第一学期的华文表现是在最优秀的10％之内的时候，我非常雀跃。
总而言之，虽然我本身会欢迎减少华文在小六会考的比重，但客观地说，我并不认为如果我们不强调华文，我的孩子和其他学生就会受惠。如果有推动力促使他们争取更好的表现，孩子是能够克服挑战的。
如果我们一味迁就他们，让他们沉溺于华文很难掌握的想法，我们绝不可能取得让我们感到自豪的高水平双语。
中国学生来新加坡两年后便能掌握英文，我们在幼儿园（至少）便开始接触华文的孩子，没有理由不能学好华文。 -
