Exemptions are granted (as a general rule) if you get A1 for that subject for all the tests. But for some subjects like Math, where the cohort tends to be v good at, it's more than A1, must be 80+. For languages and humanities, in my son's year, can be exempted if it's an A1 (>75). You'll receive a letter if you are exempted.
Adding on to these points:
- Aside from doing well in the termly tests, need to have good conduct in class as well. Besides that, teachers have the final say; I know of students who have A1 for all the terms, but weren't granted exemption (although they eventually got that A1 anw)
- The letter often comes pretty close to the examination dates (iirc 1-2 weeks beforehand?) so that students will not forgo studying of a few subjects in hopes of an exemption
For what's tested in each subject, would be better to check with the teachers the format and scope. I'm sure the teachers will help out in that aspect.
Hope this info helps!
Will share with DS this info. :thankyou:

As the class exercises and tests will be mainly on passage-based comprehensions, the sparknotes / cliffnotes will more than suffice. Your boy just needs to take down notes in class and go through the text at home. Also, they will not cover the entire book. -
May I find out how does the boy with avg score of normal chinese (in primary school) cope in HCI? If the boy cant manage the higher chinese, can he opt to take normal chinese instead?
-
As far as I know, HCI doesnβt offer normal chinese. All their boys do HCL.
