          minnie2004:

I just ordered 四五快读 recommended by tamarind which is just what I need to teach my kids Chinese at home in a systematic way. I'm looking forward to start this Chinese \"I can read\" program w/ my kids soon. Thanks tamarind for introducing these books to us :celebrate:
Same here, I am deeply grateful for tamarind's generosity in sharing these books as we are living in a country now with zilch chinese books. They have enabled me to teach my little boy chinese at home effectively. And I am very heartened to see so many mummies ordering numerous chinese books for their young kids at the dangdang sprees. Yet, MOE wants to move in the wrong direction and 泼冷水 to our enthusiasm.

It happens that this coming Sunday is Mother's Day. Guess that's why he has this theme, focusing on the character \" 母\". 母语就犹如我们的母亲, 不能遗弃。

Frankly, I SITLL don't quite understand why must lower MT weighting. :? Maths also very difficult mah. Some spend countless hours on Maths tuition and on learning the subject but still cannot score well. Some even profess to have no aptitude in Maths no matter how hard one tries. Why don't lower the weighting for Maths as well?

Already I read in the papers that from 2012, teachers will teach Chinese according to ability starting from P1 and that the teaching methodology will cater to the respective groups, so already they're going in the right direction towards more effective teaching of the subject, so why the need to lower weighting? In the primary school years where foundation is being built, every subject is equally important.

The Chinese teachers must be feeling the heat. From my time till now, many (including school personals and students) feel that Chinese teachers are not important and many a time, due respect was not given to them. In fact, it's quite difficult to control and teach a group of unmotivated and rowdy students Chinese. If we lower the weighting, the poor Chinese teachers will be deemed to be even more unimportant, with more difficulties managing disrespectful (only during Chinese class) students. These teachers may feel their importance in schools being compromised (变成没地位). In fact, it'll deter many people with the ability to teach Chinese, which will result in the shortage of Chinese teachers. Err, maybe in this case, more foreign talents can be employed to fill in the gap. 😉

                  :goodpost: sunflower!

Lowering the weighting is going to send out a very wrong signal, resulting in a vicious circle:

demotivated students and MT teachers => less qualified teachers in the future => even lower MT levels

Also agreed that \"In the primary school years where foundation is being built, every subject is equally important\". We can't expect everyone to become an expert in MT, but at least we should give our kids the opportunity to build a solid foundation in languages when they're young :nunchuk: .

I agree with this. When I was studying in a convent school during sec school, CL was regarded as a uncool subject. No one listens when CL teacher is teaching and some of the girls even made fun of CL teachers. Majority just hated the language hence they do really badly. So yes... it's a vicious cycle. If certain mindset are form about the language, then it takes many generations to reverse that.

ha, i agree to one of the post, Set up a school called: I Hate Chinese secondary school. Those who select to go to this school no need to count chinese in PSLE. just need to use 3 subjects = 300 marks.

DSA Entry Condition: They must prove that they really hate the subject to the core and want to migrate overseas because of this subject. A medical visit to IMH is preferred. This group of losers (or you can call them bright sparks or elites) are given a new syllabus called CL H (H for hatred). They only need to know 3 phrases to pass CL H. 我恨华文, 我讨厌华文, 我不是华人。
