We don’t know what kind of ‘work’ schools want PVs to do. Back then in 2006, the school wanted parents to do different stuff…i remember a couple was asked to do some entrepreneurship program, someone to water the plants, someone to be the morning ‘policeman’ to help kids cross the road at 630am everyday, housewives to be readily available to help out for last min events.

I don’t think u need to have sparkling credentials…what can a specialist Doctor and lawyer offer in a school setting? Unless he is a paediatrician or child psychologist, that would be highly relevant. Or lawyer must be willing to do free English tutoring to the weaker students. I believe it’s how you can convince the school(s).


My job credentials were nothing great in my field (bilingual editor), but I offered my flexi time to coach the kids in English & Chinese. Wrote to 3 schools & rejected by 1. In the end, the school which I chose to spend most time at, didn’t even use my job experience. I was tasked to assist with PE and PAL, just like all the other PVs. And some miscellaneous art & craft. Maybe the schools just want your availability and enthusiasm.

Great points! Thanks for sharing. Indeed I think the school is looking more for commitment and availability. My doctor friend is a urologist, so unless the school needs someone to lecture on things like erectile problems for parents, I think his scope is limited... :rotflmao:

I think whether one is selected for PV depends on the needs of the school for that year rather than the skill set sometimes. A friend is an IT auditor, in the end he was tasked to take photos in learning journeys and school events mainly, and has served as traffic warden in a few occasions. He volunteered to teach IT skills but in the end the school valued his hobby ( photography) more he always joked. But this was 6 years ago, a SAP school in the East.


Likewise, another banking friend has helped out mainly in school performances like carrying band instruments and accompany kids on learning journeys though she has volunteered to coach and tuition weaker kids in maths. This case was 4years ago, for a SAP school in the North.

Just sharing 2 examples I know. Can’t help but conclude, sometimes what they need is your time to volunteer, rather than your skill set as certain days somehow there is a lack of parent volunteers.

Your urologist friend can't be expected to give a talk on vasectomy to primary school kids. :rotflmao:

When schools look for PVs, they generally need parents who are available to help out with school related matters at short notice. Hubby and I took turns. Most of the time he did PV on saturdays...every Saturday, there are CCAs. When the kids arrive and once they have all assembled, he will contact the teacher to bring them to the classroom. His friend who did PV had to bring batches of kids for football practice.

if the school doesn't take in PVs nor have any religious links, that could be one reason why 2B is not competitive. Many would fall under 2C, where they have no association with the schools.
