I think whether one is selected for PV depends on the needs of the school for that year rather than the skill set sometimes. A friend is an IT auditor, in the end he was tasked to take photos in learning journeys and school events mainly, and has served as traffic warden in a few occasions. He volunteered to teach IT skills but in the end the school valued his hobby ( photography) more he always joked. But this was 6 years ago, a SAP school in the East.

Likewise, another banking friend has helped out mainly in school performances like carrying band instruments and accompany kids on learning journeys though she has volunteered to coach and tuition weaker kids in maths. This case was 4years ago, for a SAP school in the North.

Just sharing 2 examples I know. Canโ€™t help but conclude, sometimes what they need is your time to volunteer, rather than your skill set as certain days somehow there is a lack of parent volunteers.

        Chief,

Your urologist friend can't be expected to give a talk on vasectomy to primary school kids. :rotflmao:

When schools look for PVs, they generally need parents who are available to help out with school related matters at short notice. Hubby and I took turns. Most of the time he did PV on saturdays...every Saturday, there are CCAs. When the kids arrive and once they have all assembled, he will contact the teacher to bring them to the classroom. His friend who did PV had to bring batches of kids for football practice.

Iโ€™m looking at Northland in Yishun, wondering why Phase 2B is not so competitive but 2C is like more than 200%. Wondering what happened.

if the school doesn't take in PVs nor have any religious links, that could be one reason why 2B is not competitive. Many would fall under 2C, where they have no association with the schools.

What janet88 said are good reasons. In addition, it is my belief that this year's 2C is likely going to be more competitive than last year's, especially for traditionally \"2nd choice\" schools. This is because of the significant reduction in places and schools this year. If your 2nd choice school is on the borderline and may not have places in 2C(S), you should go for it in 2C instead of gambling in 2C(S).

PRs will naturally go for the less popular schools in 2C, since they have no chance in the hotter schools. MOE set aside lesser places for PRs and foreigners this year. The total number of places is actually lesser than the total births (PRs+SCs) 6 years ago. So you can imagine the pressure on PRs to secure a place by 2C. While SCs may have absolute priority over PRs in individual phases, if an SC gets balloted out of a place in 2C while a PR gets into his 2nd choice school in 2C, the SC will still lose out to the PR.

Bottom line - Don't waste your 2C chance to get into a reasonably good school. Like floppy said earlier, a bird in hand is worth much more than dunno how many in the bush.

                  zac's mum:

I don't think u need to have sparkling credentials...what can a specialist Doctor and lawyer offer in a school setting? Unless he is a paediatrician or child psychologist, that would be highly relevant. Or lawyer must be willing to do free English tutoring to the weaker students. I believe it's how you can convince the school(s).

My job credentials were nothing great in my field (bilingual editor), but I offered my flexi time to coach the kids in English & Chinese. Wrote to 3 schools & rejected by 1. In the end, the school which I chose to spend most time at, didn't even use my job experience. I was tasked to assist with PE and PAL, just like all the other PVs. And some miscellaneous art & craft. Maybe the schools just want your availability and enthusiasm.

Great points! Thanks for sharing. Indeed I think the school is looking more for commitment and availability. My doctor friend is a urologist, so unless the school needs someone to lecture on things like erectile problems for parents, I think his scope is limited... :rotflmao:

He can work as GRL and advise parents with one child only and encourage to contribute to nation building :boogie:

                    zac's mum:
Sure, as many as you wish. For those who don't have any privileged heritage or religion, PV is the only fair way to \"fight\" for the 2B priority by sowing your efforts. I would say it is the only meritocratic path besides 2C.

Actually GRL route also can but that's unpredictable because subject to shifting electoral boundaries.

Regarding pv, I inquire as early as when my kid is 4 years old and every 6monthly the answers I got was there were insufficient PV jobs so no vacancies for them to open application for purpose of PV. Imagine my disappointment when I found out someone else given PV jobs (of unskilled nature) at the same sch during the period that I was looking for same opportunities. So I don't feel p2b is meritocratic. The school has the say to award application vacancies based on the applicants situation (perhaps that pv parent was outside 2km so no chance in p2c while I still had).

Then on after my kids in the sch when parents were asked if they could volunteer for sch activities, I didn't sign up as I feel give the PV more jobs to fulfil their requirements lah...as active psg reduces the sch workload that pv can do to fulfil requirements. ๐Ÿ˜‰
