Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools
-
Oh my gosh! What, where & how can I get myself started?!
Zac’s mum - I’m staying at punggol. Only know Nan Chiau & Holy Innocents are established & reputable schools. Any other recommended schools for consideration?
Floppy - Are the above considered popular? Do they have PV? How do I submit application for the PV? Usually when does the PV registration starts? -
Intruder,
You can shortlist the schools in your estate and call them to enquire if they need PVs and if they do, when and how do you should apply? -

Thk u for your advice.Intruder,

May i know how do you go about choosing the school like how to know the school is gd at which area, etc.?
What i know is choosing primary school is unlike choosing preschool where we can visit the school, talk to the teachers, etc., right? -
intruder:
This is subjective as everyone has their own preferences. Some prefer short distance from home, single-sex school, secondary-affiliated school, elite school, etc. Some don't really care and will just take any neighborhood school. What is your preference?

Some factors to consider: do u mind a Christian/Catholic school? The popular ones in north east are Holy Innocents and Paya Lebar MGS. But I think u have a boy right?
Mee Toh is also popular. I think it’s a Buddhist school?
Nan Chiau is popular because it is a SAP school. Some poeple like the Chinese culture. But it means your child should be already quite good in Chinese otherwise will struggle.
There are also some popular "neighborhood" secular schools in the northeast, but I’m not sure which exactly. -
galaxyraider - My priorty will be:
1) Distance
2) Secondary-affiliated school
3) Don’t need to be elite school… just want an established and reputable one with good track records in all areas
4) Single-sex school
Are the above factors to be considered for selecting a school? Any other factors?
zac’s mum - Holy Innocents and Nan Chiau are in my "sort of" shortlisted list but i’m staying in Punggol so not sure what are the chances to get in. Nan Chiau is offering higher chinese but is it compulsory to take that subject during P1?
Having said that, how do you all know what the schools are gd at… like academic, sports, arts, etc.? -

for SAP schools, higher chinese is compulsory from p1 to p4.galaxyraider - My priorty will be:

your child should be a dragon year baby...so be prepared for the higher number of registration. if you are not successful in PV, then your choice in Phase 2C is even more crucial. -
janet88 - Thanks for your reply. My child was born in 2013… he’s a snake year bb so does it means will have a higher chance? Nan Chiau doesnt offer PV now so i guess i’ll be in categorised under phase 2C, is that right? And for phase 2C don’t need to do anything else beside registration, right?

Intruder, yes, you are right. You will be in 2C but you are likely not able to stand a chance to ballot as you stay in Punggol. Nan Chiau usually ballots within 1km in 2C. Suggest you look for other schools instead or move within 1km of Nan Chiau to be eligible for balloting. -
Orb - My parents are staying in Seng Kang. If i register my address using their address, is it possible to be categorised under phase 2C?
