Hi, i need some advise, my girl, 4yrs old, is affected by HFMD since Tuesday. She has not been eating anything since Wednesday and drink very very little. Should i send her to A & E? Anybody has this experience, pls share with me. How long it takes for her to recover?

          How serious is her condition?

Do read up this thread on the earlier discussions we had.

Not eating could be due to ulcers in her mouth/throat that makes it painful to swallow. Advice from my friend is to get something cold like icecream. She bought soya beancurd - put in fridge. Cool and soothing...so easy to go down. But the offset is that kid may well end up with cough after hfmd.

If you are concerned, best is to go see doctor and see what s/he says.

HFMD tenure depends on severity - understand it could be 5 to 10 days.

My daughter is also down with HFMD, think it all started on Sat with the fever she had, Sun she started complaining of pain in the throat and then ulcer started, Mon she started developing a rash and a few blisters on her fingers. Went to see the doc yesterday (ie Mon) and he suggested Isotonic drinks (like 100 plus, H2O) as they go down more easily than plain water.

So far my daughter’s appetite is normal, I’ve been cooking porridge and noodle soup. She’s also taking fluids well, but I do have a bottle of isotonic drink on standby.

If it is just loss of appetite then it is normal. just imagine if you have a lot of ulcers in your own throat, then you would also not want anything to go through, including saliva - much less solid food.

My dd was 2 yr 2 mth old when she caught it, 3rd wk into going to childcare. she was already skinny, so you can imagine how bad it was when she took very little food for a week...
she was always asking to be carried, crying because of the pain/discomfort, with her tears, saliva and mucus all mixed and flowing down her face, which would be lying on either dw or my shoulder...

ice cream is a solution, and choose the milky ones as those will give her some milk too. the cold temp will reduce slightly the pain when swallowing too.

If got fever, make sure you give med so that the temp comes down.
