DSA 2017

Perhas patents of kids, whether they received CO/WL or rejection can share their experience. Has DSA really moved forward and looking beyond academic excellence or is it still very much the same...just narrower focus on a single subject?
I think the answer is - yes, and no. If you are referring to IP schools, then from my (albeit limited) experience talking to a few schools, they are looking for a certain level of academic performance as well as being outstanding in the area under evaluation. And I think that it fair both to the school as well as the student, because if the gap between the student's ability and school standard is too great, the likelihood is that they will struggle and may not be able to benefit from the through train nature of the programme.
But given that DSA is being offered by more schools and these schools generally will have more places for DSA students, I expect these schools would be able to look beyond academic excellence to excellence in the field in which they are looking for pupils.
Essentially its all about competition, isn't it? If there are say 10 places available under a certain specialty, and 20 students with excellent grades and are qualified under the specialty, then its unlikely that the applicants with average grades will be considered even if his art or sport or leadership is outstanding.
As for academic specialties, you're likely to find even more kids who are excellent in the subject under question and also very good in their other subjects. But with the new DSA direction, I think (hope) there will be more places in more diverse schools offering places to those who are strong in particular area, reducing the stress of the whole PSLE exercise. -

Congrats to your DD Lee_yl !!
It is good to get into a school in her area of interest and aptitude!
Now the last lap , all the best to her.
It definitely relives our pressure.
With the CO in hand, DD1 is actually motivated to work harder for the final lap. :scratchhead:
Most children love a challenge and try to out do themselves. But treat that same challenge as a pressure and they wither. Honestly at 12, to think that your life depends on the performance of a set of exams is terrifying. Directly or indirectly this is the environment for them - thanks to family, teachers, peers. Sad, isnt it?[/quote]Really, didn't know that such behavior is so prevalent.
Totally agree. I pity the 12yos. It wasn't like that during my time but the introduction of IP schools really turned up the pressure. And like it or not, once the boat is missed, it takes much more effort to catch up again. We really spend too much time preparing for PSLE, time which could be better spent learning new skills. -

Totally agree. Our nation is too obsessed with PSLE because it is an exam with high stakes and will determine which route our kids take for the next 4 to 6 years. We parents also spend alot of time \"re-studying\" PSLE at the expense of personal development -

Ya lah, so much time, energy, effort and :moneyflies: all just for this high stakes exam / rat race is really :frustrated:
Although we have a CO in hand, looking back, it is definitely not fun!!! Hope that the new AL banding can make life less stressful for the next generation. -

Parents, can someone enlighten me on the school allocation process. So after we submit the preference form, regardless WL or CO, when will we know the school posting? Is it on PSLE results day, or is it on the same day as all other kids who didn’t take part in DSA?
Thank you. -
