2017 PSLE Discussions and Strategies
-
My DS tried out first 20 questions from section A RGPS science prelims 2017. Since there is no answer key, those interested can pm me. I will send answers. We can compare and then check only when the answers differ. This is not fool proof but better than doing nothing.

Ds is still making couple of careless mistakes for Math. I don’t know how to help him. He said he checked but he could not spot the mistake. Eg. 12 x 7, he wrote as 126 although he knows his timetable well. I’m worried and concern.
-
Tell your son, to check if 7 x 12 = 126, is correct or wrong : 2 ways, to double-check, or spot for mistake -
Either
Take (7 x 10) = 70 + 7 + 7 = 84
(because he will know that 7 x 10 = 70, because any number times 10, apart from zero itself, must end with sets of Ten)
Or take
(7 x 11) + 7 = 77 + 7 = 84
(because he will know that 7 x 11 = 77)
In other words, ask him to find the closest number that he is confident with or very familiar with (choose either 7 x 10 or 7 x 11) and then, calculate forward / take it forward, from where he is.
If he re-compute : obtain 84, then he will know that 126, is wrong
This Friday (29 Sep) is the Maths PSLE paper.
To have a clear mind to tackle Maths, pls ensure your child sleep early on Thursday night

I asked him to check the same was as you mentioned.
When i asked him what is 12 x 7, he's able to tell me 84. I wonder why he is not able to spot that he was writing the wrong answer. Could it be that he’s too nervous and he’s rushing? -
I suspect is the exam condition that made him nervous, or sometimes sub-consciously or un-consciously, he may be doing say question 5 (example), but perhaps his mind is still hovering on another qn (say, qn 3)
Just tell him to calm down, focus on each qn, re-read the qn carefully
You notice : when he is calm, away from exam, he’s able to give u the correct answer (84)? -
Hi
One of my colleagues remind me that the child will feel even more stressed than the parent because they are the ones taking the exam. Give lots of encouragement and tell them to breathe Deeply when they feel panic on the actual day.
Good luck to all taking the exam this Thurs ! -

Jia You to all P6 and parents-of-P6.
It will be a tiring weekend starting from now. Perhaps for now onwards, I would suggest loads of hugs and assurance to your children. And not nagging at them for their carelessness.
Even though I do not have a P6 DC this year, already I am feeling the fire. Jia You!!! -

He’s the anxious type. He does well for his practice papers but makes careless mistake during the actual papers.
