Arun did not know how to wash the dishes.

      Arun mess it up.

Assuming the above are the two sentences given, and that "Not" was the given word, my take is…

"Not knowing how to wash the dishes, Arun messed it up."

                    Hello!

How was the English today? DD said paper 2 was harder than 2016 PSLE English paper 2. Composition sounded pretty all right. She wrote about a farewell party and her friends giving main character a special gift as memorabilia. Some of her friends wrote interesting plots like giving special gifts to elderly(community service), Teachers' Day Celebration, giving friend a mug signed by favourite actor for her birthday, etc.
For paper 2, my DD said there was this one question in sentence synthesis about washing the clothes which she knows she did it wrongly. Anybody knows what the actual sentence is? DD said her friend(top in English in Prelim) put : Not having washed the dishes before, Arun messed it up. (Might be slightly different, DD doesn't exactly remember what she wrote). She wrote completely differently because she misread the question :slapshead: \"Not once had Arun washed the dishes and messed it up.\"(meaning he had never messed up washing the dishes).

Cassie said that the paper was quite difficult. The compo was a walk in the park for her, though. She wrote about the main character's best friend bringing her on a treasure hunt, with a big party at the end and the character's best friend gave her a mug with her favourite singer's signature on it.

For paper 2, about that question. Cassie was whining about it when she got home. If I am not wrong, the sentence should something like:

Arun did not know how to wash the dishes. Arun mess it up.
                    ^
                    |
Now that I think about it, I don't think that was correct. | Oops. Cassie wrote:

Not only did Arun did not know how to wash the dishes, he also made a mess of it.

All in all, the paper was quite difficult this year.

Can someone enlighten me pls? Am a bit confused on the compo requirements. From the above sharings, seems that quite a number of students wrote more about the situation surrounding the special gift, rather than the gift itself. Eg. If the compo talks more about the party or celebration, and a bit about the gift, is that out of point since the topic is \"A Special Gift\"

Since Arun did not know how to wash the dishes, he mess it up.
