Mine finished 19 comics last night and this morning I took out the HP book that she was reading during revision period. She told me finished about half an hour ago..planning for Gardens by the bay trip today.

Wow! Your gal must be good in her writing. Get lots of ideas & English will be good fr so much reading.

NLB loans up to 16 books max each borrowing. Enough for your gal's appetite? Save the earth better than buying books & nowhere to chuck. Mine read non-stop & hard to push them to their usual sports. Will sign them up for ice-skating or rock-climbing.

How I wish dd's language is good, Esteema. Her Eng is still near bottom at her level  the comics are in chi and her chi in school also average only. I m still thinking dunno how to help her in her Eng. That's why I told her go read the books at home when she asked to go library this morning. Go library very difficult to get her borrow proper Eng or even Chi books. We went to another nlb the last visit. dd was so happy to see different types of comics. we used 3 cards, 2 adults and one kid. 10 each quota for adults. dd1 borrowed 19books, dd2 has few YS magazine and I have 3/4 mag。total 28.
It's good that she starts liking books. You can steer her towards more \"solid food\" as she develops. Anyway, kids do get motivated by other kids as their develop & progress in their childhood.

Are u staying anywhere near Bishan? You can try Academia (Mr Sherman Tseng altho ano KSP mum shared with me Mr Johann Loh also good). They're really good in coaching kids & you'll see marked improvement. For compo, I know Ms Agnes from Writers@Work can teach kids to write very well for compo. Again, I heard her class full (no more vacancy coz one mum lucky enuf to catch last place last month). I don't know abt other teachers in same centre tho).

Let your gals enjoy their holidays. Good that mummy MrsKiasu brings them to library to nurture reading habits.

Wat comics your dd read, I would like to read comics too, I used to like Archer n tintin; Lao fu zi :faint:
I only saw marvel comics , which my ds reads - no good for language improvements lah . I think read text book is better to improve ... 😆

I do agree to some extent value of comics diminish as a child moves upper Pri. Still, comics perform its function of spurring our young kids towards love of books & develop reading habits. It's not easy for our young ones to bridge to serious reading on their own. I rmbr when trying to move my kids fr comics, I tried buying comics Science series sold at Popular. I'm glad I did coz they all enjoy serious Science reading even now. They build on their prior learning, albeit fr comics. We've to look thro the child's lenses, coz oftentimes, our adult perception of learning can be passé for the new generation.

          Hi Esteema,

Can share where to go for rock climbing or ice skating rink, in Sg ? Sounds exciting. Thanks
Kids & cousins used to visit the JCube. These days they prefer the Kallang rinks. Pls avoid the Marina Bay one bcoz the surface often not resurfaced properly (turnaround time too short due to bz decision to meet high demands?) & kids then to slip & fall.

Rock-climbing go for Kallang Wave or sign them up for Outward Bound.

            Hi Esteema,

Outward bound adventure school sounds interesting: is it for youth (minimum Sec school students age) or also include age of P5 / P6 students ? Thanks

Altho they do customize programs, so far they've done for sec sch students in partnership with schools. My older child involved & it was refreshing to see the development in my child - proactiveness, time consciousness, more \"on-the-go-go\" attitude. Unfortunately, their programs starts fr 14-year-olds.

I've written in to requests for a customized 12-year-old 3-day programme.

                Hi esteema,

For academia, other than having dedicated Teachers, can you also provide your view on the teaching materials? More challenging than say TOP school papers or compared to TLL? And do you mind sharing how Long your child was with them before seeing improvements?

                Much thanks 😄

Was very worried when I constantly see his S&T score not steady - at times get 3/5 correct & stimes \"0\" tho had been with TLL 2 years! :moneyflies: :((

Thankfully, went for a talk & decided to try Academia just before SA2 started coz last place available (same experience as one mum this year). Had lessons fr Oct till following year CA1 got 5/5 & no turning back since. That's abt 3-4 mths' weekly work to see improvements alr.

I was disappointed with TLL coz the teachers don't seem to be teaching in the real sense. Most are young pretty things & my kids just adore them refusing to quit. They mark work according to answer keys but did not correct or explain so kids keep making similar mistakes. What's the use? We paid hefty fees but no good results.

At Academia, I was impressed coz Mr Tseng explain principles & concepts very clearly & well, ensuring they understand. My PRC neighbour took my advice & engaged Mr Tseng. The young chap return every 6 months to join in Mr Tseng's classes. Another of DC's peers had a freak-out during Prelim English Orals. The mum sent him to Mr Tseng. Academia had planned for Oral & DSA prep classes, engaging specialists presenters, video-photographer & the entire academic team to give variety to the P6. The idea is to expose kids to diff coaches to excel (as PSLE invigilators may not be familiar faces).

In MHO, I believe they really hv the kids' interests at heart. Truly educator's heart.

Materials wise, they're a lot better & more encompassing coz to encourage a generation of kids on screen gadgets, they provide stacks of short stories, grammar & Vocab mini handbooks (actually comprehensive). Btw, one of TLL Curriculum writer joined Academia.

Btw, they hv a pre-PSLE (light-hearted but instructional) video clip of both Mr Tseng & Mr Loh.

                    Hope the link still available:-
